Biology
Physiology
Empoleon is a large, navy-blue, penguin-like Pokémon. It has a wide, yellow beak that extends upward into three pointed horns that form a trident-shaped crest bracketing blue eyes. Large horns are a symbol of leadership and strength for Empoleon. There is a blue marking resembling a crown over its eyes and a white, lacy marking running down its chest. A blue, fin-like projection forms a collar around its throat and runs down the length of its chest and belly. On its back are two raised, gold bumps and a second blue fin that forms its tail. Its yellow feet are webbed with three toes each and its feathers form ruffs above its feet. It has wide, flipper-like wings rimmed with blue along the tips, and three golden claws.
Empoleon is a large penguin-like Pokémon. In terms of color, it has a closer resemblance to a "real-world" penguin than its pre-evolved forms have because it is mostly navy blue as opposed to being a lighter blue. Its feet actually appear to have webbing on them. Its wings are tipped with blue metal and have three golden claws sticking out at the bottom. It has a short, blue, metal "fin" sticking out of its back and another "fin" that's on the front of its body that extends to where its chin would be then splits to form some sort of collar. It has two gold-colored spots on its upper-back. Its most prominent feature is the three-horned trident-like crest that extends from its beak. This crest represents an Empoleon's power and the leader of a colony of Empoleon, Prinplup, and Piplup will have the largest horns.
Gender differences
None.

Special abilities
The edges of these wings are comparable to master-crafted blades, capable of slicing through ice floes, and this Pokémon will use them to attack anyone or anything that damages its pride. However, it prefers to avoid unnecessary disputes at times. When swimming in the water, Empoleon can move as fast as a jet boat. In Hisui, people have revered Empoleon since ancient times, referring to it as the Master of the Waves.
Empoleon can swim faster than a jet boat and, by using its razor sharp wings, can cut huge glaciers in a matter of seconds. It can also learn any attack that its pre-evolutions can learn, but Empoleon's attacks are stronger. As a fully-evolved Pokémon (and the final evolution of a Water starter Pokémon), Empoleon can learn Hyper Beam, Giga Impact and Hydro Cannon.

Behavior
Evolution
Given their immense pride, Empoleon are surprisingly social creatures. They live in large colonies led by the oldest and most powerful male. The leader has the largest horns on its head.
Empoleon evolves from Prinplup and is the final form of Piplup.

Habitat
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Wild Empoleon live in ice shelves in very cold climates.

Main series
Major appearances
Barry's Empoleon
Empoleon made its main series debut in Barry's Busting Out All Over!, under the ownership of Barry.

Kenny's Empoleon
In Last Call — First Round!, Kenny's Prinplup was revealed to have evolved into an Empoleon during the Performance Stage of the Sinnoh Grand Festival.

Other
Empoleon debuted in The Rise of Darkrai, under the ownership of Kai. It was used in a battle against Dawn's Piplup, and also tried to stop Darkrai together with Allegra's Infernape and Maury's Torterra. It was later used in the Battle Stage of the Alamos Contest.

In A Full Battle Bounty!, Professor Kukui's Empoleon was the fourth Pokémon used in his Full Battle against Ash. It first went up against Pikachu, causing some damage to him before Ash switched to Melmetal, which defeated Empoleon.

In The Sinnoh Iceberg Race!, Masaya's Empoleon competed in the Pokémon Iceberg Race before being targeted by TRT.

Minor appearances
In The Semi-Final Frontier!, a Trainer's Empoleon went up against Tobias during the Lily of the Valley Conference finals. It battled his Darkrai off-screen, but as with the other five Pokémon owned by its Trainer, it was easily defeated by the Pitch-Black Pokémon.

Trivia
Trivia
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Empoleon.
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Empoleon.
* Empoleon is the only starter Pokémon that loses both its weakness and resistance against the initial types of the other two starter Pokémon in its final evolution, having no weakness or resistance against Grass and Fire attacks. It instead gains weakness to both Torterra (a Ground) and Infernape (a Fighting). Perhaps to compensate for this, Empoleon is tied for the fourth most resistant Pokémon of all, as explained below.
** Due to this unique type combination, Empoleon is also the only fully-evolved first partner Pokémon which neither resists nor takes double damage from the moves of the other first partner Pokémon types (Fire and Grass).
* Empoleon has the highest base Special Attack of any final-form starter Pokémon.
* Empoleon is the only evolved first partner Pokémon to be Steel.
* Empoleon is tied with Swampert for the second lowest base Speed of all final evolution starter Pokémon (with the only slower one being Torterra).
* In Black and White, a Biker gang called the Black Empoleon will gather along the Tubeline Bridge on Friday nights. If the player defeats their leader, they will rename themselves after the player's lead Pokémon.
**However, all three (Empoleon, Swampert, and Torterra) have considerably higher Defense and Special Defense compared to the other final evolution starter Pokémon of their regions (Sceptile's Defense and both of Blaziken's defensive stats are considerably lower than Swampert's, while both of Infernape's defensive stats are low compared to either Empoleon or Torterra in Sinnoh).
* Empoleon is the only Steel Pokémon related to a starter Pokémon.
* Empoleon has 11 resistances and one immunity, the second most resistances of any Pokémon. It is surpassed only by Magnemite and its evolutions, who have 12 resistances and one immunity. It shares this position with Mawile and two legendary Pokémon, Dialga and Registeel.
* Empoleon is one of the only two Steel Pokémon that resist Water attacks, together with Dialga.
** Empoleon is also one of the only two non-Ice-types that doubly resist Ice, together with Heatran.
* Empoleon is one of the three Pokémon that get STAB from Steel Wing. The other two are Scizor and Skarmory.

Origin
Origin
Empoleon is based on an emperor penguin and an emperor-in reference to its crown (which also resembles an anchor) and royal appearance. Also, the crown has the appearance of a trident. It also bears some resemblance to the royal penguin.
Empoleon appears to be based on an emperor penguin and an emperor, in reference to its royal appearance. Based on its names in various languages, Empoleon may specifically take inspiration from Napoleon Bonaparte, an emperor of France. Empoleon's beak has the appearance of both a crown and a trident, a fishing tool and the weapon of choice for the Greek god of the sea, Poseidon. Empoleon also bears some resemblance to the royal penguin. Its ability to cut through ice with its sharp wings could be a reference to an icebreaker.

Name origin
