::We've only ever had numbered generations referred to in official sources twice: "sixth generation" on Masuda's blog and "9th Generation" on an internal Game Freak greeting card. (Both sources are also tricky to actually rely on — one is Masuda's personal blog rather than something produced by TPC/Game Freak, while the other is a card not intended for public distribution.) While both are ordinals, they are also both in different formats, so I'm not sure there's a clear reason to choose either in particular. Given how significant a change renaming the generation pages would be, I would want to be very confident in the chosen new titles before we moved them. --Snorlax'Monster 13:03, 19 September 2023 (UTC)

:::When did they start using these terms officially? It seems like they were originally fan-made terms and were then co-opted by The Pokémon Company (and affiliates). Qzekrom (talk) 01:20, 17 October 2023 (UTC)

:The cast commentary for the Detective Pikachu film–which is an original English source so there's no language barrier–uses "Generation I". This was moved to a more obvious part of the page a few days after the most recent comment in this discussion, and is relevant as the only official usage of the Roman-numeral form.
