Blurb

Caught in a sudden thunderstorm, our heroes quickly seek shelter from the elements at an ominous looking castle on a nearby cliff. Although this seemingly vacant fortress is a little on the spooky side, Ash, Misty and Brock would rather be jumpy than soggy. That is, until they hear moaning coming from a nearby corridor! Follow our heroes through the pitfalls and mazes of this (haunted?) house on the hill!

Plot

While escaping a rainstorm, Ash and his friends enter what at first seems to be an empty castle. Soon after entering they hear a screaming and rush to the source which turns out to be people receiving medical care from Pokémon. After Brock's usual romantic gestures Dr. Anna introduces herself. Brock's further love proclamations are interrupted by a nurse, Keiko, telling Dr. Anna that it is time for the Zubat scan. The trio follows her into the procedure room where a Zubat wearing a green bow hovers over a man and uses its supersonic sound waves as an ultrasound. Dr. Anna further explains how they use Pokémon to diagnose and treat medical problems. Machoke uses its strength to treat back problems, Spinarak uses its web to make bandages, and Mareep's electricity stimulates muscles. She explains that the Pokémon and her work together, and the Zubat with the green ribbon is revealed to be named Mimi. Misty asks why she works here, to which Dr. Anna explains that a patient of hers used to live here and now lets her run her clinic in the mansion.

As Dr. Anna is about to leave to make her usual rounds Brock interrupts to show her his Zubat. Mimi and Brock's Zubat hover in the air together prompting Brock to declare that they are a perfect team, he suggests that he and Dr. Anna could be a perfect team too. When Dr. Anna hesitates to this he offers to at least use his Zubat to help her and Mimi make their rounds as a thanks for allowing the group a shelter for them to stay in.

Team Rocket is also in the castle, having sneaked in the back way because, as Jessie explains, "It's what all the villains do". They are frightened by a sound and a mysterious shadow that turns out to be Jessie's Wobbuffet. She returns him back to his Poké Ball, Meowth then remarks that he smells something, Team Rocket finds the food and begins to eat it. They are caught in the act as Ash and Misty enter.

Meanwhile, Brock, Dr. Anna and their Zubat are walking down a corridor, Brock's Geodude carrying two boxes and his Pineco are also seen. Dr. Anna asks Brock about his training to be a Pokémon Breeder, Brock says he was training until he met her. As he explains his intention to use his Pokémon to assist in human medicine James is heard saying "Look out!". Shortly afterwards, Team Rocket runs by with James carrying a sack of stolen food, Dr. Anna yells at them inquiring if they have an appointment, Team Rocket stops unable to resist launching into a modified version of its motto. After finishing, Meowth tells Jessie and James to hurry up and get out of there. Ash, Misty, and Keiko come running and shouting for Team Rocket to give back the stolen food, Team Rocket refuses and Ash orders Pikachu to get them, but Team Rocket runs away down a hall, then Dr. Anna, Brock and their Zubat run after them. Dr. Anna tries to warn Team Rocket about the hall, but they along with Brock, Dr. Anna and the two Zubat end up sliding down a hidden passage. A wall closes behind them.

Dr. Anna turns on the lights in the underground passage. Dr. Anna and Brock realize that there is no way to climb back up the way they came. Team Rocket starts to go another way before Dr. Anna asks them what they were doing, they say they are leaving and ignore Dr. Anna's warning to stop. They hit a wall that popped up in their way, Dr. Anna says that there is no telling what will pop up in a maze like this. She then opens up a laptop and orders Mimi to use Supersonic which then downloads onto the laptop, Brock orders his Zubat to use Supersonic in order to reveal the rest of the maze. Dr. Anna reads the map to decide which way to go.

Back in the above ground part of the castle, Ash and Misty discuss the maze with Keiko, she points out on the map the location of the maze's exit. Back in the maze there are two ways to go, both of which according to Dr. Anna's map seem dangerous. Misty, Ash, and Keiko are standing outside the maze exit to find it is covered up with dirt and gravel, to which they decide to dig it up. Underground, Dr. Anna tries to figure out which way to go, as Jessie grows impatient and charges ahead with her Wobbuffet right into another pop-up wall. Dr. Anna's laptop shows that having activated one route opens the other one up. They go on until the laptop alerts them of another obstacle, once again Jessie and Wobbuffet rush ahead, this time though Jessie shoves Wobbuffet ahead of her. Thinking the way is safe she runs ahead but triggers a wall to fall on her. Dr. Anna realizes the traps are triggered by someone walking across the floor.

They all finally reach the exit, which has by then been dug out by the others. James suddenly bags the two Zubat and Team Rocket runs to the exit and hit the stuck door. On the other side of the door, Ash, Misty and Keiko give up trying to push the door open. Pineco uses Selfdestruct and blows the door open, the Zubat escape from the bag and Brock and Dr. Anna emerge from the maze. As Pikachu looks down at the maze he is lassoed and pulled in by Team Rocket. Team Rocket runs out of the maze and off into the forest carrying Pikachu in an electricity-proof bell jar. James orders Weezing to use SmokeScreen, Brock's Zubat and Mimi blow the smoke away. Jessie sends out Arbok and orders it to use Poison Sting, before it can use it, Brock's Zubat uses Supersonic which confuses Arbok into attacking Team Rocket. Brock's Zubat evolves into Golbat. Arbok, recovered from being confused uses Poison Sting against Golbat, which replies with Wing Attack to deflect Arbok's attack, then uses Supersonic against Arbok and Weezing. Dr. Anna's laptop malfunctions because of Golbat's Supersonic being too powerful. The jar containing Pikachu is dropped and broken. Now free, Pikachu uses ThunderShock to blast Team Rocket away.

Back in the castle, Dr. Anna tells Brock that Golbat's Supersonic is too strong to use for medical practice. The group bids farewell and go back on the road to get the next Johto Badge.

Trivia

  • The Pokémon are utilized for a variety of medical practices:
  • The dub title of this episode is also shared with an episode of Scooby Doo, Where Are You!, as well as an episode of The Fairly OddParents.
  • In this episode, Team Rocket uses a variation of its motto.
  • The narrator's first words, "It's another bright, sunshine-y day," and last words, "And so, after a dark and stormy night," may be a reference to the Johnny Nash song "I Can See Clearly Now".
  • This is the first episode where a main character's Pokémon evolves during a fight with Team Rocket.
  • This episode shares many similarities to Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon - A main character (in this case Brock) is trapped underground alongside Team Rocket, the other main characters and some of the trapped character's Pokémon help dig them out, and one of the trapped character's Pokémon evolves.
