If a Pokémon's nickname contains a prohibited word, the Pokémon's nickname will be erased, reverting to the default species name in that Pokémon's language of origin. (Since the Generation I and II games do not track language of origin, Pokémon transferred from the Virtual Console games have their language of origin set to the transferring game's language.) Poké Transporter informs the user when this occurs. The word check is applied after removing spaces and after converting characters such as <code>PK</code>.

The Nintendo 3DS has an individual filter list for each region and language combination (for example, Canadian French and European French have different filter lists). However, the US English list also applies to all U region languages, and the UK English list also applies to all E region languages (no additional lists apply in the J, K, or T regions). All of these lists are different from the Generation V lists.
The list of prohibited words is stored server-side, and does not match either the Generation V filter list, any of the Nintendo 3DS's filter lists in any region or language, or any combination of the former. Transferring from Generation V and transferring from the Virtual Console uses different filter lists (each blocks some words the other doesn't, and each allows some words the other doesn't). In particular, almost all words in kana are allowed when transferring from the Japanese Virtual Console games.

For unknown reasons, the set of word filters used differs depending on various factors:
* Since at least Version 1.5,fact when transferring out of a Generation V game in any language, only the Generation V filter (all languages combined) is used. As a result, the filter effectively only applies to Pokémon whose generation of origin is Generation III or IV.
** In at least Version 1.1, an outdated version of the 3DS's global filter applied when transferring out of Generation V.
** In at least Version 1.1, the Generation V filter would trip even if the filtered word was only contained in the name.
* When transferring out of a Virtual Console game on a U region 3DS, only the US English filter is used, even if all four of the 3DS system language, Bank's language, Transporter's language, and the Virtual Console game's language are not English.
* When transferring out of a Virtual Console game on a K region 3DS, the Korean language filter is used.
* Since at least Version 1.4,fact when transferring out of a Virtual Console game on a J region 3DS, only the US Englishfact filter is used. Since the Japanese Virtual Console games can only type kana, only words that are on the US English list in kana will be filtered. The only such word is the apparent test word ワルモシ.

If a Pokémon's original Trainer contains a prohibited word, the original Trainer will be replaced by a generic name, and Poké Transporter will also inform the user. The generic name depends on the Pokemon's language of origin and the transferring game. (As a result, the Chinese OTs exist in the data of Poké Transporter but are not actually used.)
