Banette's name is a combination of ''bane'' and ''[[wp:marionette|marionette]]'', or perhaps 'banter', referring to the way it skips about. Its Japanese name may be a corruption of ''[[wp:Jupiter|Jupiter]]'' or a reference to ''Geppetto'', a woodcarver who built a puppet that came to life in the story of [[wp:Pinocchio|Pinocchio]]. The ''-petta'' may also come from a Japanese translation of ''puppet''.
