===Differences between the episode and ''Team Rocket Blasts Off''===
*Gary's battle with Giovanni was largely featured off-screen.
*In the book, Team Rocket immediately notices that Togepi slipped away and tried to find it before accidentally falling into the basement, and were also implied to have gotten the idea to create the rigged challenger platforms during that time, as well as having a brief falling out before reconvening upon flashing back to their respective pasts. In the anime, Team Rocket is never shown to have even been aware of Togepi's escape, with the circumstances behind their appearing from underneath the battlefield and creating the rigged platforms never being explained.
*Although the book never shows Giovanni meeting with Mewtwo for its emergency assignment, it is indirectly alluded to when Team Rocket encounters Ash and the others, where Jessie mentions the regular Gym Leader was unavailable due to an emergency, with Gary deducing that whatever the emergency entailed most likely involved the Pokémon that defeated him.
*The book does not mention Viridian Gym being destroyed.
