I'm thinking that this was just a prototype name for Flying while they were in developement. Would it be worth mentioning in the Trivia section that a statue in Lilycove Museum which says "It's a replica of a famous sculpture. It depicts an ancient BIRD POKÉMON."? I thought it was odd that 'bird' was capitalized, normally reserved for actual names, types, moves etc. Could it be a reference to the old type?
