On December 29th, 2012 a teaser was added to the end of a Pokémon commercial that revealed there would be a special announcement airing on January 8th, 2013. A few days later on January 3rd, 2013, the Pokémon website for the United States posted a message to visit their website on January 8th.  Similar messages appear on the Pokémon website for other countries.

On January 7th, it was revealed that the announcement would be a special edition of Nintendo Direct, which would be named "Pokémon Direct".  It was also revealed that the announcement would be broadcasted simultaneously around the world.  The following day, Pokémon Direct was streamed across the world, including at eight in the afternoon in Japan, Noon in the UK, and six in the morning on the East Coast of the US.  It was presented by [[Satoru Iwata]] who began with [[History of Pokémon|the history of the franchise]] and was concluded with the reveal of [[Generation VI]] with two new games for the Nintendo 3DS called [[Pokémon X and Y Versions|Pokémon X and Pokémon Y]] and a few details and images of the starter Pokémon in those games. In addition, Iwata also stated that, for the first time the franchise's history, the new games would be released worldwide at the same time in October of 2013.
