Biology
Physiology
Ambipom is a purple, simian Pokémon with two tails, each with a large, rounded hand with three red-tipped fingers. The tails also have a cuff of a rounded frill on the wrists. The bases of Ambipom's tails also have a similar frill. It has round ears with red insides. Ambipom has an arrangement of split hair sticking out from the top of its head. These strands of hair are longer on a female. It has a purple, triangular nose and wide eyes.
Ambipom is a much larger and advanced form of Aipom. It has two tails, each with a large, rounded hand with three red-tipped fingers. These tails are much more versatile than Aipom's tail, and the tails also have a cuff of a rounded frill on the wrists. The bases of Ambipom's tails also have a similar frill. Unlike Aipom, Ambipom's feet are purple, not tan, and the insides of its ears are red. Ambipom has an arrangement of a split hair sticking out from the top of its head, replacing Aipom's spiky tuft. Ambipom has a purple, triangular nose that is much more visible than Aipom's, and much wider eyes.

Gender differences
Ambipom can leap from tree to tree with brilliant speed. To eat, it deftly shucks nuts with its two tails. As it has two hands on its tails, it rarely uses its arms. Ambipom can use their tails to communicate with other Ambipom. Ambipom works in large colonies in heavily wooded areas and makes rings by linking tails with another Ambipom, apparently in friendship. Ambipom has been seen giving rings even to humans sometimes. It also shows affection by using both of its tails to wrap and squeeze people. It lives along with its young, Aipom. It lives high in the treetops of tropical, temperate, and even boreal forests, using its tails for balance as it swings from branch to branch. In the Alola region, while searching for comfortable trees, Ambipom tends to get into territorial disputes with Passimian, in which they win half the time.
The two strands of hair on top of Ambipom's head are longer on a female.

Special abilities
Evolution
Ambipom can leap from tree to tree with brilliant speed. They also have solid Attack power and can use many devastating Fighting moves.
Ambipom evolves from Aipom.

Behavior
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
To eat, Ambipom deftly shucks nuts with its two tails. Now that it has two hands on its tails, it only rarely uses its arms. Ambipom work in large colonies and make rings by linking their tails, apparently in friendship.

Dawn's Aipom, formerly Ash's, evolved into an Dawn in Journey to the Unown!. Upon evolving, she matured greatly, and became one of Dawn's most talented Pokémon for contests. She was later given to O to train in ping pong.

To date, no other Ambipom has appeared in the anime.

In the manga
Gold's Aipom, Aibo, evolved into an Ambipom prior to his battle with the legendary Arceus. However, as the HeartGold & SoulSilver moves back to a few weeks before the fight, it wasn't until several rounds later that its evolution was finally shown on-screen. This event, however, distressed Togebo, being the only Pokémon on his team that was in its basic stage.

Major appearances
Dawn's Ambipom
Ambipom debuted in Journey to the Unown!, where Dawn's Aipom, formerly owned by Ash, evolved. Upon evolving, she matured greatly and became one of Dawn's most talented Pokémon, being used in many of her Contests. In To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!, she was given to O in order to train and become a ping-pong champion at his training center in Vermilion City.

Minor appearances
In Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel, three Trainers' Ambipom were living at the Azoth Kingdom.

An Ambipom appeared in HZ031. It reappeared in HZ032.

Gold's Aipom, Aibo, evolved into an Ambipom prior to his battle with Arceus. However, he debuted in Pleased as Punch With Parasect. This event, however, distressed Togebo, being the only Pokémon on his team that was in his basic stage.

A Trainer used an Ambipom against Hareta in Clash! Hareta vs. Koya.

Trivia
Trivia
* Ambipom is the only Pokémon to have a base stat total of 482.
* Despite it learning Dual Chop via level-up starting in Generation VII, it can't learn it via Move Tutor in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
* Out of all the Pokémon whose pre-evolved forms require a move to evolve, Ambipom's is the only one that needs to know Double Hit.

* Ambipom and Linoone are the only evolved Pokémon that have Pickup.
Origin
Origin
Ambipom appears to have been based on a monkey, with an exaggerated concept of a prehensile tail. It may be specifically based on the squirrel monkey, which is similar in appearance, and also shares its large smile with Cymbal-banging monkey toy. It is also similar to an Ahuizotl (creature), a creature of Aztec mythology with monkey hands and a fifth human hand on its tail.
Ambipom appears to be based on a New World monkey and the exaggerated concept of their prehensile tail. Ambipom also shares its large smile with a cymbal-banging monkey toy. It may vaguely reference the Ahuizotl (mythology), a creature of Aztec mythology with monkey hands and a fifth human hand on its tail.

Name origin
Name origin
Its English name comes from a combination of the prefix Ambi, meaning both, and possibly the word palm. It could also come from ambidexterous, meaning being both right- and left-handed, and palm. The Japanese name may contain 猿 en, monkey, te, hand, and the English word both, referring to the hands on its tail. エテ ete can also be taken to mean monkey.
Ambipom may be a combination of ambi- (prefix for both) or ambidextrous, Aipom, and palm.

Eteboth may be a combination of 猿公 etekō (monkey), 得手 ete (strong point), and both.
