Lileep (Japanese: リリーラ Lilyla) is a dual-type Fossil Pokémon introduced in Generation III.

It is resurrected from a Root Fossil and then evolves into Cradily starting at level 40.

Biology
Lileep is a plant like Pokémon based on a Crinoid with eight dark-tipped, pink petal-like tentacles protruding from an opening on top of its head. Inside the pitch-black opening are two glowing, yellow eyes. The remainder of its head is purple with yellow eyespots resembling targets. The head is connected to the body through a yellow stem. The body itself is purple and semi-spherical. Four stubby roots anchor this Pokémon firmly to the rocks of its home on the List of Pokémon by habitat.

Physiology
In ancient times, it lived in warm seas. It waves its tentacles around to disguise itself as seaweed to attract prey, which is swallowed whole after being entangled. It has a tendency to cling to rocks on the seabed, to anchor itself during hunting. Lileep has been extinct for 100,000,000 years, but specimens can be revived from Root Fossils.
Lileep has eight tentacles protruding from its body. The cup-shaped body has a set of circles around it and is connected to a semi-spherical base that has four 'roots' to anchor Lileep to the ground. One of these 'roots' eventually become the fossil that Lileep is resurrected from. Lileep is a fossil Pokémon no longer found in the wild, and must be resurrected from a Root Fossil.

Gender differences
Evolution
None.
Lileep evolves into Cradily.

Special abilities
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Lileep anchors itself on a rock on the seafloor in order to catch its food. The prey is attracted to Lileep's tentacles, since it disguises them as seaweed by swaying them slowly. When prey comes near, it is swallowed whole by Lileep's massive mouth.

Behavior
Game data
Lileep leads a very simple life for a predator Pokémon. Its body remains immobile at all times, only moving its mouth to catch its prey. It will occasionally move its tentacles to grip objects or to resemble seaweed to fool unsuspecting prey.

The exact habitat of Lileep is unknown but Root Fossils from which this Pokémon is resurrected from are found in the Hoenn and Sinnoh regions. Their original habitats were probably on the seafloor at some point.  This is supported in the Mystery Dungeon series where they are found in the wild on a deep seafloor and a cave connected to the ocean.

Trivia
Trivia
* Lileep's is one of two Grass-type lines that are not in the Plant egg group. The other is the Treecko line.
* Lileep and its evolved form, Cradily, are the only:
** Grass Pokémon that belong in the Water 3.
** Rock List of Pokémon by shape.
* Before Generation VIII, the Lileep family had only been obtainable with their Hidden Ability in the Pokémon Dream World. Due to the closure of the Pokémon Global Link, the Lileep family could no longer be obtained with their Hidden Ability except through breeding. The Lileep family's Hidden Ability can currently be obtained via Max Raid Battles or the Ability Patch.
* Lileep and its evolved form, Cradily, are the only Rock List of Pokémon by shape.

Origin
Origin
It may be based on crinoids, or sea lilies, marine animals related to seastars, which were once believed to be extinct.
On the Origin of Species: Lileep and Cradily
Lileep may be based on crinoids (also known as sea lilies), extant marine animals. Crinoid fossils are particularly abundant, possibly inspiring Lileep's status as a fossil Pokémon. Its tentacles may be based on those of the sea anemone.

Name origin
Name origin
Lileep's name may be a combined form of lily and peep, seeing as it seems to peep out from the darkness. It could also be lily and sleep, as they have been sleeping as a fossil for over a hundred million years ago.
Lileep may be a combination of lily and deep, sleep, creep, or peep.

Lilyla may be a combination of lily and possibly lila (Spanish for Syringa, referring to its purple color).
