Biology
Physiology
Trapinch is an orange, insectoid Pokémon. It has a round body with a white underside and four stumpy legs. It also has a proportionally large head, small black eyes with twinkle-shaped pupils, and a zigzagging mouth.
Trapinch is an orange, bug-like Pokémon with a large jaw. Trapinch has a roundish body with a white underside and short, stump-like legs. Trapinch has a big head in proportion to the rest of its body. Its eyes have a gleam in them. Despite resembling an insect, Trapinch is actually a Ground.

Gender differences
Trapinch's large jaws are powerful enough to crush any boulders that get in its way as it digs through the sand of the List of Pokémon by habitat in which it lives. It can go a week without water or food. Instead of actively hunting prey, it digs into the sand to build its bowl- or cone-shaped nests, waiting for prey to tumble inside and become trapped. When night falls, Trapinch will dig itself a spot underneath the sand and go to sleep. Due to the size of its head in contrast to its small body, Trapinch will be unable to get up after flipping over onto its back, making it vulnerable to natural predators such as Sandile.
None.

Special abilities
Evolution
Trapinch's main weapon is its jaws, which can crush boulders. Trapinch are also known for their digging skills. Trapinch is one of the few non-legendary unevolved Pokémon that can learn Hyper Beam and Giga Impact. Trapinch can also go a whole week without access to any water.
Trapinch evolves into Vibrava, which evolves into Flygon.

Behavior
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)
Trapinch are patient Pokémon; despite this, they are avid hunters. After building pits in sand, they patiently await for their prey to fall. Because Trapinch's head is so big, it finds getting upright if tipped onto its back difficult.

Major appearances
Goh's Trapinch
In Making Battles in the Sand!, Goh caught a List of Goh's Pokémon while he was investigating a sandstorm in Mauville City. It has since made further appearances in Pokémon Journeys: The Series.

Other
Multiple Trapinch debuted in Beg, Burrow and Steal. They had dug a complex underground labyrinth containing a lake, which Hal wanted to find after he previously came across it when he was young. When Hal, Ash, ashfr, Elisa, and TRT got lost in the labyrinth, they eventually found the underground lake.

In Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! (Part 2), Solana used her Capture Styler on a Trapinch and had it use Rock Tomb to trap J's client's henchmen's Pokémon that were attacking Dawn, Brock, and Officer Jenny's Pokémon.

In A Rivalry to Gible On!, a Trapinch living at Mt. Shady used its Arena Trap to capture Ash while he and Khoury were trying to catch a Gible.

In Showdown at the Gates of Warp!, due to Dialga and Palkia's influence, Goh's Flygon devolved into a Vibrava and then into a Trapinch. It was later reverted in the same episode. The same also occurred with Alternate World Goh's Flygon.

Trivia
Trivia
* The Trapinch-line, along with the Gligar-line, are the only evolutionary families to have no Bug Pokémon and be in the Bug.
* Trapinch is the only member of its evolutionary family to have a Hidden Ability.
* Out of all unevolved Pokémon, Trapinch can learn the most moves by leveling up which its evolutions cannot, excluding Pokémon who evolve via evolutionary stones, such as Skitty and Growlithe.
* Trapinch has the lowest base Speed stat of all Ground Pokémon.
* Trapinch is able to learn Gust as an egg move despite not having any wings. This is likely because its evolutions do have wings.
* Trapinch's base Attack stat is higher than that of its evolved form and is the same as that of its final evolved form. That may be a reference to the fact that antlion larvae are more aggressive and predatory than their adult stages.
** It also has the highest base Attack stat of all Pokémon that can evolve twice.
** Because of this, evolving a Trapinch in Pokémon GO will result in its CP going down, a trait otherwise only seen in cocoon Pokémon such as Kakuna.
* As of Generation VIII, Trapinch and its evolved forms are the only Pokémon that are in the Bug and Dragon Egg Groups.

Origin
On the Origin of Species: Trapinch, Vibrava and Flygon
On the Origin of Species: Trapinch, Vibrava and Flygon
It is based on the larval stage of the antlion, who spend their days in sandy pits before maturing into a winged, adult stage.
Trapinch is based on the larval stage of the antlion, which live in conical sandy pits before maturing into winged adults. Its head resembles a cartoonish depiction of trapping#Foothold traps.

Name origin
Name origin
Trapinch's name is a combination of "trap" and "pinch".
Trapinch may be a combination of trap and pinch.

Nuckrar may be a contraction of "nutcracker", a reference to Trapinch's nutcracker-like jaws.
Nuckrar may be derived from nutcracker. It may also allude to knucker, a type of folkloric dragon which lives in a hole.
