In an interview for ''[[Pokémon Ultra Sun & Pokémon Ultra Moon Edition: The Official National Pokédex]]'', [[Ken Sugimori]] elaborated on the design process for Combee in particular. Based on a request to create a "Pokémon made of three honeycombs stuck together", the designers came up with a design featuring three larvae wedged inside a honeycomb. Sugimori noted that while the concept sounded "gross", it is nonetheless a distinctive and attention-grabbing idea, so the team decided to keep the design and tweak it slightly. Combee's three faces were simplified, based on simple faces found in old comic books, to make its overall appearance friendlier.<ref>"What It Takes to Create a Pokémon."
