The Ice type (Japanese: こおりタイプ Ice type) is one of the seventeen types. Notable Trainers that specialize in Ice-type Pokémon are Lorelei of the Kanto Elite Four, Pryce of Mahogany Town, Glacia of the Hoenn Elite Four, Candice of Snowpoint City, and Brycen of Icirrus City. Prior to Generation IV, where moves are designated physical or special based on the move itself rather than its type, all Ice-type moves were special.
The Ice type (Japanese: こおりタイプ Ice type) is one of the eighteen types. Ice-type moves are super effective against Dragon-, Flying-, Grass-, and Ground Pokémon, while Ice-type Pokémon are weak to Fighting-, Fire-, Rock-, and Steel moves.

Characteristics
Additional effects
Defense
In Generation I, Ice-type Pokémon cannot get frozen by Ice-type moves, which are the only moves that can freeze their targets. In Generation II, Ice-type Pokémon cannot get frozen by Ice-type moves, but they can get frozen by the Normal move Tri Attack. Starting in Generation III, Ice-type Pokémon cannot get frozen at all.

The Ice-type is considered by many to be the worst of all types defensively. It only resists itself, while carrying weaknesses to Fire, Fighting, Rock and Steel, making it weak to moves such as Stealth Rock, Bullet Punch and Fire Blast. Their sole resistance is nullified by Swinub Piloswine Mamoswine Ground, Articuno's and Delibird's Flying, Snover Abomasnow line's Grass, and Kyurem's Dragon. Even with a second type, all but two Ice-type Pokémon—Froslass and Rotom—have more weaknesses than resistances and immunities.
Ice-type Pokémon are also immune to hail and, as of Generation VII, the move Sheer Cold. From Generation VII onwards, Sheer Cold also has increased accuracy when used by an Ice-type Pokémon.

Offense
As of Generation IX, the Defense of Ice-type Pokémon is increased by 50% during snow.
Offensive-wise, because only Empoleon Heatran, which are Steels, doubly resist Ice, and the fact that double weaknesses to Ice are fairly common (largely due to Dragons, whose final forms are often doubly weak), Ice is, along with Ground, Fighting, Rock and Fire, one of the most commonly used attacking types. Ice also pairs well with other common attacking types, notably Ground and Electric. Water Pokémon can also effectively use Ice attacks, which cover their major weakness of Grass, as well as Dragon, which resists their moves.

Similarly, an Ice-type Pokémon can often use Water moves, which covers their weakness of Fire and Rock.
Pokémon
As of Generation IX, Pokémon or % of all Pokémon are Ice-type (counting those that are Ice-type in at least one of their forms, including regional forms), making it the least common type among Pokémon, followed by the Fairy.

Contest Properties
The Pokémon below are listed by their current types. have had their types changed.

When used in contests, Ice-type moves typically become Beauty moves, while some may be Cool moves.

Pokémon
As of Generation V, there are 31 Ice-type Pokémon or 4.78% of all Pokémon, making it the fifteenth most common type, or effectively the third least common type ahead of the Dragon and Ghost types.

Moves
Moves
As of Generation IX, there are 33 Ice-type moves, which makes up 3.53% of all moves (excluding those that are Ice-type only under certain circumstances), making it the third rarest type among moves, after Flying, Ground, and Dragon and before Bug, Ghost, and Fairy.
Prior to changes in Generation IV, all damaging Ice-type moves were special, but they may now also be physical depending on the attack.

In the TCG
Water (TCG)
Due to the decreased amount of types in the TCG, Ice-type Pokémon are generally listed as Water Pokémon.
Ice-type Pokémon in the TCG are generally weak to Fighting and Metal with no resistances. Ice-type Pokémon are strong against Fighting and Fire Pokémon, whilst Grass and Colorless Pokémon can resist this type.

Trivia
Trivia
* Although the Ice-type existed since Generation I, pure Ice-type species were not introduced until Generation III.
* Generation VIII introduced the most Ice-type Pokémon of any generation, with eleven, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Ice-type Pokémon, with four.
* In Generation III, all Ice-type moves were Beauty moves.
** Should regional forms not be counted, Generation VII introduced the fewest, with only one, Crabominable.
* Only the Normal has a lower number of resistances than the Ice-type, having no resistances (but one immunity). Ice only resists itself.
* Generation I introduced the most Ice-type moves of any generation, with six, and Generation VI introduced the fewest Ice-type moves, with only one, Freeze-Dry.
* All types that are weak to Ice have been combined with it on at least one Pokémon.
* In Generation I, no Ice-type Pokémon were able to evolve. They either were in the final stage of their evolutionary family or were not part of one. The first Ice-type Pokémon that could evolve during their debut were Swinub and Smoochum.
* There has been a Gym Leader or Elite Four member who specializes in the Ice-type introduced in each generation. All three of the Ice-type Gym Leaders, Pryce, Candice, and Brycen, are the seventh Gym Leaders in their respective region.
** Although the Ice type existed since Generation I, pure Ice-type Pokémon were not introduced until Generation III.
* Generation V introduced the most Ice-type Pokémon of any Generation, with eight and Generation II introduced the least Ice-type Pokémon, with five.
* The Ice type has the fewest resistances of all types, only being resistant to itself.
** Every Ice-type introduced in Generation V is a pale blue color. It is the only generation in which this happens.
* The Ice type has the most unique combinations with other types of all other types, with 8.
** Generation V also introduced the most pure Ice-types, with six new Pokémon. Generation III introduced three, Generation IV introduced one, while Generation I and II introduced none.
* Similar to Fire moves, all Ice-type moves were Beautiful moves in Generation III.
*** The Kyurem Pokémon introduced in Generation V was a Legendary Pokémon.
** The only Ice-type move that is not Beautiful is Ice Fang, which is Cool instead.
* Ice is the only type that is super effective against Flyings that doesn't in turn resist Flying moves.
* Only the Normal has a lower number of resistances than the Ice-type, having no resistances (but one Ghost).
** In fact, it doesn't resist anything it is super effective against, with it only resisting itself.
* The Ice type is the only type that is super effective against the Flying and Grass to not resist them in turn.
* Ice-type attacks are resisted by all types that Water Pokémon resist.
* The Ice type is tied with the Electric for the fewest Pokémon who can Mega Evolve, with two each.
** It is also tied with the Ground- and Ghost for the fewest Pokémon that can Gigantamax, with 1 each.
* The Ice type is the only type excluded from the Central Kalos Pokédex.
* All Ice-type moves are eligible to be used in Sky Battles.
* There has been at least one Ice-type specialist in every region and generation. It shares this trait with the Psychic- and Fighting types.
** The Ice type is the only type to not have a notable specialist native to the Alola region. Instead, Sina from the Kalos region is an Ice-type Pokémon specialist in Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
* The Ice type has been paired up with every other type except for Normal and Poison, the most common of these being Water, with 8.
** This makes Ice the only type to have not been been paired up with Poison.
