The '''Ice type''' (Japanese: '''こおりタイプ''' ''Ice type'') is one of the seventeen [[type]]s. Notable Trainers that specialize in Ice-type Pokémon are [[Lorelei]] of the [[Kanto]] [[Elite Four]], [[Pryce]] of [[Mahogany Town]], [[Glacia]] of the [[Hoenn]] Elite Four, [[Candice]] of [[Snowpoint City]], and [[Brycen]] of [[Icirrus City]]. Prior to Generation IV, where moves are designated [[Physical move|physical]] or [[Special move|special]] based on the move itself rather than its type, all Ice-type moves were special.

==Characteristics==

===Defense===

The Ice-type is considered by many to be the worst of all types defensively. It only resists itself, while carrying weaknesses to {{t|Fire}}, {{t|Fighting}}, {{t|Rock}} and {{t|Steel}}, making it weak to moves such as {{m|Stealth Rock}}, {{m|Bullet Punch}} and {{m|Fire Blast}}. Their sole resistance is nullified by {{p|Swinub|The}} {{p|Piloswine|Swinub}} {{p|Mamoswine|Family's}} {{t|Ground}}, {{p|Articuno}}'s and {{p|Delibird}}'s {{t|Flying}}, {{p|Snover|The}} {{p|Abomasnow|Snover}} line's {{t|Grass}}, and {{p|Kyurem}}'s Dragon. Even with a second type, all but two Ice-type Pokémon—{{p|Froslass}} and {{p|Rotom|Frost Rotom}}—have more weaknesses than resistances and immunities.

Offensive-wise, because only {{p|Empoleon|two}} {{p|Heatran|non-Ice-types}}, which are {{type2|Steel}}s, doubly resist Ice, and the fact that double weaknesses to Ice are fairly common (largely due to {{type2|Dragon}}s, whose final forms are often doubly weak), Ice is, along with {{t|Ground}}, {{t|Fighting}}, {{t|Rock}} and {{t|Fire}}, one of the most commonly used attacking types. Ice also pairs well with other common attacking types, notably {{t|Ground}} and {{t|Electric}}. {{type2|Water}} Pokémon can also effectively use Ice attacks, which cover their major weakness of {{t|Grass}}, as well as {{t|Dragon}}, which resists their moves.  

Similarly, an Ice-type Pokémon can often use {{type2|Water}} moves, which covers their weakness of Fire and Rock.

 

 

==Pokémon==

As of Generation V, there are {{tt|31|including forms of Castform and Rotom}} Ice-type Pokémon or 4.78% of all Pokémon, making it the fifteenth most common type, or effectively the third least common type ahead of the {{t|Dragon}} and {{t|Ghost}} types.

* Only the {{type2|Normal}} has a lower number of resistances than the Ice-type, having no resistances (but one immunity). Ice only resists itself.

* All types that are weak to Ice have been combined with it on at least one Pokémon.

* There has been a [[Gym Leader]] or [[Elite Four]] member who specializes in the Ice-type introduced in each generation. All three of the Ice-type [[Gym Leader]]s, [[Pryce]], [[Candice]], and [[Brycen]], are the seventh Gym Leaders in their respective region.

* Generation V introduced the most Ice-type Pokémon of any Generation, with {{tt|eight|including Rotom's Frost form}} and Generation II introduced the least Ice-type Pokémon, with five.  

** Every Ice-type introduced in Generation V is a pale blue color. It is the only generation in which this happens.

** Generation V also introduced the most pure Ice-types, with six new Pokémon. [[Generation III]] introduced three, [[Generation IV]] introduced one, while [[Generation I]] and {{gen|II}} introduced none.

*** The {{p|Kyurem|only dual-typed Ice-type}} Pokémon introduced in Generation V was a [[Legendary Pokémon]].

* Ice is the only type that is super effective against {{type|Flying}}s that doesn't in turn resist {{type|Flying}} moves.

** In fact, it doesn't resist anything it is super effective against, with it only resisting itself.
