Piloswine is a big, brown, furry swine Pokémon with an impressive hump on its back. It also has two tusks made of ice, which seem small but can be lethal. These tusks thicken when it snows, and they are smaller on a female Piloswine than on a male. It has floppy ears that are sensitive to sound. Piloswine has two beady eyes in its head; however, these are usually covered up by tufts of fur. As it is usually unable to see, it checks surroundings with its sensitive pig-like nose instead. As a result, Piloswine is constantly charging at foes when it moves. The hairs on its back stands up straight as a warning sign for this.
Piloswine are big brown furry Pokémon that have an impressive hump on their backs, giving them a hunchbacked appearance. They also have two tusks made of ice, which seem small but can be pretty lethal, and floppy ears which are sensitive to sound. Piloswine’s shaggy coat makes it unable to see, so it checks surroundings with its sensitive pig-like nose instead. Piloswine’s hair is so long that it usually covers its small, hooved legs.

In the 3-D Pokémon console games, as well as the anime, it is shown that Piloswine has two beady eyes in its head; however, these are usually covered up by tufts of fur. Also, in Generation V, Piloswine eyes are seen in its sprite animation when the tufts are lifted by the air.
Piloswine's thick fur allows it to survive in harshly cold environments that it inhabits, such as List of Pokémon by habitat, mountainous regions and frozen tundra. Its fur is so long that it usually covers its small, hooved legs. Despite the small size of its legs, its hooves ensure even footing on icy ground. Piloswine often digs for food buried beneath snow and ice using its tusks.

Evolution
Piloswine evolves from Swinub and evolves into Mamoswine.

Gender differences
(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data&rarr;Evolution data.)
A female Piloswine has shorter tusks than a male.

Special abilities
|type1=Ice
Although its legs are short, its rugged hooves give it sure footing even on icy ground. As an dual Ice- and Ground Pokémon, Piloswine can also use a variety of moves from both types. Its tusks of ice thicken when it snows.
|type2=Ground

Behavior
|name1=Swinub
Piloswine are strong, brave, and undeniably stubborn. Wild Piloswine jealously guard their herd's territory, driving off any creatures that trespass. Domesticated Piloswine are loyal to a fault. There are stories of Piloswine who refuse to go down no matter how hard a battle becomes in an attempt to live up to their trainer's expectations of them.
|type1-1=Ice

|type2-1=Ground
If Piloswine charges at an enemy, the hairs on its back stand up straight. It is very sensitive to sound, and because its long hair obscures its sight, it will continue charging repeatedly.

</div>
Dawn's Swinub evolved into a Piloswine in Sleepless in Pre-Battle. It later evolved into Mamoswine in A Breed Stampede!.

Other
Pryce's Piloswine first appeared in As Cold as Pryce. Pryce thought that his Piloswine had abandoned him when he was a young Pokémon Trainer after the two of them got hit by a Magmar's Fire Blast and thus became cold and bitter. When Pryce found his Piloswine in a cave and frozen solid with a Burn-Healing Herb, Pryce let go of his coldness. Pryce used his Piloswine in the Gym battle against Ash in the following episode.

Minor appearances
Piloswine made its animated debut in Celebi: Voice of the Forest as one of the Pokémon captured in the Poacher's cage at the start of the film. Its appearance in the film was very brief, lasting barely a second.

In Pichu Bros. in Party Panic during the chase between the Pichu Brothers and a Houndour, the Pichu Brothers disguised themselves as a Piloswine but the Houndour wasn't easily fooled and eventually dismantled the disguise, revealing the Pichu Brothers.

In Entei at Your Own Risk!, many were seen being caught in Team Rocket's attack.

Pokémon Adventures
Piloswine appeared in 9 under the control of Keane, who used its sheer power to devastate Ecruteak City with an Earthquake. However, Silver defeated it easily with Gold's Politoed.

Major appearances
Pryce's Piloswine
Pryce's Piloswine first appeared in As Cold as Pryce, thus also marking the species' main series debut. Pryce thought that it abandoned him when he was a young Trainer after the two of them got hit by a Magmar's Fire Blast, and thus became cold and bitter. When Pryce found his Piloswine in a cave and frozen solid with a Burn-Healing Herb, Pryce let go of his coldness. Pryce used Piloswine in his Gym battle against Ash in the following episode.

Dawn's Piloswine
Dawn's Swinub evolved into a Piloswine in Sleepless in Pre-Battle. It later evolved into a Mamoswine in A Breed Stampede!.

Other
In the banned episode EP250, the Nurse Joy living inside the Ice Path has multiple Piloswine. They wore harnesses and were used for sledding through the cave.

In The Gates of Warp!, Alternate World Dawn's Mamoswine devolved into Piloswine in a flashback due to Dialga's influence.

Minor appearances
Piloswine debuted in Celebi: The Voice of the Forest, where it was one of the Pokémon captured in a Pokémon poacher's cage at the start of the movie.

In Entei at Your Own Risk, a Piloswine was resting in some hot springs.

In A Claim to Flame!, a Trainer's Piloswine battled in a qualifying match for the Silver Conference.

A Piloswine appeared in a fantasy in Pinch Healing!.

A Piloswine appeared in the opening sequence of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.

Trivia
Trivia
* Prior to Generation IV, Piloswine can learn AncientPower by breeding or by evolution of a shadow Swinub caught in . Despite this, it cannot evolve into Mamoswine in those generations because Mamoswine did not yet exist. This makes it and Lickitung the only Pokémon which could not evolve even if the criteria were met because their evolved forms were not yet created.
* No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Piloswine and its evolutionary family.
* Piloswine and its evolutionary family are the only Pokémon that are resistant to damage from all types of weather effects, due to their unique typing.
** Piloswine's type combination is also the only combination weak to all three first partner Pokémon types (Grass, Water, and Fire).
* Of all the Pokémon that need to know a certain move to evolve, Piloswine is the only one that has already evolved once.
* According to Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Piloswine was designed by Shigeki Morimoto, who wanted to complete the Chinese zodiac by making Pokémon from all 12 zodiac animals.
** It is also the only one of the move-based evolutions that does not learn the required move at a specific level. However, AncientPower is in Piloswine's list of level up moves and thus can be recovered by a move relearner in exchange for a Heart Scale.
*Pryce's Piloswine was defeated by Pikachu with several Thunderbolts with great effect, despite Piloswine being a Ground.
*The first syllable in Piloswine's name is pronounced with a short "i" by the announcer in Pokémon Battle Revolution; in keeping with its name origin, it is pronounced with a long "i" in the anime.
* As of Generation V, Piloswine and its Swinub Mamoswine are the only Ice Pokémon in the brown color category.

Origin
Origin
Piloswine's size/appearance seem to be based off a mix of a yak, whose mountainous habitat echoes that of the Ice Path in Northern Johto, and a boar. It also share traits with mastodons/mammoths the latter of which is expressed in its later evolution.<!--It should be noted that mammoths were grazers, while mastodons were browsers, a behavior similar to that talked about in most of Piloswine's Generation III Pokédex entries.-->
Piloswine seems to be based on a wild boar with traits of wooly mammoths. It also shares traits with muskoxen, yaks, and highland cattle, whose mountainous habitats echoes that of the Ice Path in northern Johto.

Name origin
Name origin
A combination of pilose, meaning "covered in distinct hairs", and swine (pig). Pilo may also come from the Pliocene period, which is the period the arctic ice cap formed, or pillow, referring to its puffy appearance. Its Japanese name may be a combination of 猪 inoshishi, boar, and ブーブー bū bū, an onomatopoeia for oinking.
Piloswine may be a combination of pilose (covered with fine hair) and swine, as well as a play on pile of swine. It may also involve פיל píl (Hebrew for elephant).

Inomoo may be a combination of 猪 inoshishi (boar) and ブーブー būbū (onomatopoeia for oinking).
