Although each of the flutes has a different effect, they have one thing in common: they don't go away after they are used.
===Mechanics===
The Red, Yellow, and Blue Flutes, heal, respectively, [[Attraction]], [[Confusion]], and [[Sleep]].
In [[Generation III|Generations III]] to {{gen|IV}} and {{pkmn|Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire}}, the Flutes, when used by the {{player}}, produce a sound that has an effect on {{OBP|Pokémon|species}}. They are not consumed upon use. The Blue, Yellow, and Red Flutes can be used to cure one of the player's Pokémon of {{status|sleep}}, {{status|confusion}}, or [[infatuation]], respectively. In Generation III, they can be used both in and out of {{pkmn|battle}}. In other games, they can only be used in battle. Outside of [[Orre]], the Black and White Flutes can be used in the overworld to affect [[wild Pokémon]] encounters. They decrease or increase the [[wild Pokémon]] encounter rate, respectively, or, in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, increase or decrease the [[level]]s of wild Pokémon by 1–4, respectively. If the player attempts to use a Black or White Flute in Orre, the message "This item's use is forbidden in the <sc>Orre Region</sc>." will be displayed.
The Black Flute makes [[wild Pokémon]] encounters less common, while the White Flute makes wild Pokémon encounters more common.

In [[Generation V]] and {{pkmn|X and Y}}, the Flutes cannot be used and are [[valuable item]]s. In Generation V, they can be sold to the {{DL|item maniac|billionaire maniac}} in [[Undella Town]] for a higher-than-usual price.
The flutes cannot be obtained in [[Pokémon Diamond and Pearl]] through normal gameplay. However, they can be obtained by having a Pokémon hold one of the flutes in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and transferring it into Diamond/Pearl through [[Pal Park]].

In [[Hoenn]], the player can collect [[volcanic ash]] in the [[Soot Sack]] and have it turned into Flutes at the Glass Workshop on {{rt|113|Hoenn}}. Each Flute costs a different amount of ash to make.
 
In {{2v2|FireRed|LeafGreen}} and in [[Orre]], the Flutes are mostly only obtainable via [[trade]]; only the Yellow Flute is obtainable otherwise, and not in {{pkmn|Colosseum}}. * The Flutes' Japanese name, ''vidro'', refers to a specific type of flute that originated in {{wp|Germany}}. Vidro are a common decoration in Japan.
