Chimler is first seen when {{adv|Platinum}} sends him and [[Tru]] out of their Poké Balls and instructs them to give a Pokédex to the two men in scarves that would be arriving soon. Seeing two young boys that matched the description, Chimler picks {{adv|Pearl}} as his Trainer while Tru picks {{adv|Diamond}} as his. After this, they are attacked by a flock of wild {{p|Starly}} and are forced to fight them off, taking them over thirty minutes to do so.
Chimler first appeared in ''[[PS338|Stagestruck Starly]]'' as one of the three Pokémon given to {{adv|Platinum}} from [[Professor Rowan]]. Platinum sends him out of his {{i|Poké Ball}} alongside [[Tru|Turtwig]] and gives him a [[Pokédex]] for her bodyguards (who will arrive wearing red and green mufflers), and instructs him to give it to whichever one he likes. Matching the description, Chimchar chooses {{adv|Pearl}} as his {{pkmn|Trainer}} and gives him the Pokédex. Right after that, a flock of {{p|Starly}} appear and begin attacking the group, which results in the three [[first partner Pokémon]] fighting and defeating them.


Later, whilst resting in a hotel, Pearl decides to name the Chimp Pokémon "Chimler" and uses him to battle a crowd of rampaging {{p|Bidoof}}.
In ''[[PS344|Belligerent Bronzor]]'', Chimler battled [[Mars]] and her {{p|Zubat}} at the [[Valley Windworks]]. Using his superior speed, Chimler quickly defeated the Bat Pokémon.


While Platinum trains for her upcoming [[Oreburgh Gym]] battle, Chimler, along with the rest of Pearl and Diamond's Pokémon, are used to help her hone her skills. Suddenly, during a training session, Chimler, Tru, and {{TP|Platinum|Piplup|Empoleon}} evolve into a {{p|Monferno}}, {{p|Grotle}}, and {{p|Prinplup}}, respectively.

The three soon begin training with their first partner Pokémon when [[Cynthia]] walks by and notices that the three are going to [[evolution|evolve]]. Quickly after saying this the three evolve, with Chimler evolving into a {{p|Monferno}}.

In ''[[PS356|Magnificent Meditite & Really Riolu I]]'', Pearl buys a [[Zoom Lens]] with {{OBP|Coin|Game Corner}}s Platinum won at the [[Veilstone Game Corner]] and suggests that Chimler try using the item since he has such bad aim. Aiming at a tree he fires {{m|Ember}} and nearly hits the local [[Gym Leader]], [[Maylene]]. After a misunderstanding, Maylene assumes Chimler belongs to Platinum and wants to see him in their upcoming [[Gym]] battle. The next day Chimler battled Maylene's {{p|Riolu}}. The two exchange a few attacks and Riolu gets the upper hand with its speed and lands a {{m|Force Palm}}. Riolu follows up by jumping onto Chimler, who blocks it. Although blocked, Riolu begins to use {{m|Drain Punch}} to steal his energy, forcing Platinum to switch him in. He is later sent back out to fight Riolu and it uses {{m|Rock Smash}} to scatter the field with rocks in order to hide Riolu. Platimun and Chimler manage to hit and knock out Riolu thanks to the Zoom Lens and Platinum's training at the Game Corner.

In ''[[PS359|Stunning Staravia & Stinky Skuntank II]]'', Chimler fought against some {{tc|Team Galactic Grunt}}s in order to stop them from capturing Platinum. He starts by using Ember to attack a {{p|Skuntank}}, impressing [[Paka and Uji]]. With their advice Tru uses {{m|Stealth Rock}} to assist Chimler by making a platform for him to reach the middle of the battle. Chimler uses a spinning Ember, defeating the group of {{p|Staravia}}. The two then evolve into {{p|Infernape}} and {{p|Torterra}} and the group flees to the top of a building with a satellite dish on top of it. With Paka and Uji's guidance Chimler attacks wildly with Ember and Tru attacks with {{m|Earthquake}}, causing the satellite dish to fall on top of the Grunts. Pearl then realizes that Chimler's random attacks forced the Grunts into the spot behind the satellite and weakened it at the same time. With Tru's Earthquake knocking it down the Grunts had nowhere to run, trapping them.

In ''[[PS361|Bombastic Bibarel & Heroic Hippopotas]]'', Chimler is used in a [[Double Battle]] alongside Tru at the [[Seven Stars Restaurant]], fighting against a Trainer's {{p|Bibarel}} and {{p|Hippopotas}}. Bibarel attacks Chimler with {{m|Water Gun}} and Hippopotas attacks Tru with {{m|Sand Tomb}}. The two counter with {{m|Fury Swipes}} and {{m|Wood Hammer}}, knocking out both Pokémon.

In ''[[PS397|Outwitting Octillery]]'', Chimler works alongside his team to reach the middle of [[Lake Valor]] in an attempt to find {{DL|Lake guardians (Adventures)|Azelf}}. Halfway across the lake they get attacked by [[Saturn]]'s {{p|Octillery}}, who uses {{m|Octazooka}} to destroy their raft. Saturn shows up on a UFO-like vessel and grabs Pearl while demanding to know why he was heading for the island at the middle of the lake while Chimler, [[Chatler]], and [[Rayler]] desperately try to free him. A few minutes later the Galactic Bomb goes off, with its target revealed to be Lake Valor. Pearl and Saturn witness Azelf reveal itself and Saturn and his Grunts begin trying to capture it. Pearl and his team attempt to stop them but are overwhelmed by the number of opponents and defeated.
In ''[[PS416|Double Trouble with Dialga and Palkia VI]]'', Chimler was used alongside the other Pokémon to battle against the [[Legendary Pokémon]] {{adv|Pokémon of Myth|Dialga and Palkia}}. With the help of Diamond and Pearl's Pokémon and with a combined technique, they were all able to destroy the [[Red Chain]]s controlling them.


In [[Veilstone City]], Chimler, when using a newly-bought Zoom Lens to improve his accuracy, accidentally throws an {{m|Ember}} in the wrong direction and nearly hits the Gym Leader, [[Maylene]]. After a misunderstanding, Maylene assumes Chimler belongs to Platinum and wants to see him in their upcoming Gym battle. Later, when going to receive Platinum's missing Pokédex, Pearl is separated from Platinum and meets up with Diamond who was running away from [[Team Galactic]]. Chimler, Chatler, Tru, and Lax are all used along with [[Paka and Uji]]'s {{p|Burmy}} and {{p|Buizel}} to battle Team Galactic. Chimler, as a Chimchar, seemed to be very lazy; he could usually be seen resting on a chair or bed and dangling off of his Trainer's arm at times. When not used in battle, Chimler would make great use of his {{m|Ember}} technique which could be used to melt glass or metal so they can get into various places. Chimler also seems to be very ticklish, especially when he comes in contact with grass.
