Other than being connected to {{rt|29}} in the west, it is also the town that must be passed through to reach [[Tohjo Falls]], {{ka|Victory Road}} and the [[Indigo Plateau]], via {{rt|26}} and {{rt|27}}.

In [[Generation]]s {{Gen|II}} and {{Gen|IV}}, this house is where the {{player}} lives before beginning their journey. The [[Mom|player's mother]] lives here, and after the player has left town for the first time, she will save money if the player wishes and occasionally buys decorations for the [[bedroom]], or items such as {{DL|Potion|Super Potion}}s.

The player's bedroom is a bit fancier than {{ga|Red}}'s bedroom in {{3v2|Red|Blue|Yellow}}. Unlike Red's, it can also be customized to include several [[Pokémon doll|Poké Doll]]s, as well as [[bed]]s, [[game system]]s, and [[carpet]]s. The [[Town Map]] hanging on the wall can also be replaced with one of several [[poster]]s of different Pokémon.

The player starts the game in their bedroom, in front of their PC and radio. The PC in the top-left corner of the room has a few important purposes, but unlike in [[Pokémon Red and Blue Versions|Red and Blue]], it does not contain an item.

===Professor Elm's Lab===

Professor Elm's laboratory lies right next to the western entrance into New Bark Town. Professor Elm works at his Laboratory with his aide, usually doing experiments concerning [[Pokémon eggs]] and [[breeding]]. In {{gen|II}}, the lab is a small building near the player's house that has been slightly modified in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}. Here, [[Pokémon Trainer]]s just beginning their quest are given the choice to receive either a {{p|Chikorita}}, {{p|Totodile}}, and {{p|Cyndaquil}} from [[Professor Elm]].

Inside is one aide of Professor Elm's, a couple of shelves full of books, a table with three [[Poké Ball]]s (a capule in {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}), a computer, and a few tips for the player. There is also a machine here that has the ability to fully rest/restore all of the player's Pokémon, just like a [[Pokémon Center]].

At the begining of the game, there will be a [[Silver (game)|red-haired kid]] looking through the window into the lab. If spoken to, he will kick people out of his way, and then continue to spy upon the lab.

In {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}}, Professor Elm's Lab has an upstairs level, however it is unknown what is up there.

New Bark Town's population is about 10, not counting the player or the rival. This makes it the least populated town in Johto. This low number is likely due to its lack of amenities like a Gym or Pokémon Center, and its isolation from the rest of [[Johto]].

==Name origin==

New Bark Town's name comes from the fact that [[Generation II]] introduced 100 ''new'' Pokémon, as well as a reference to the fact that all of the towns of Johto are named for plants. The motto also references the newness of Generation II compared to the previous generation. Wakaba (若葉) means new leaves or fresh verdure.

*Despite appearing to be farther away from the [[Johto]]-[[Kanto]] border on the Town Map, the [[player character]]'s house is 7 steps from the border with {{rt|27}}, 10 steps closer than the [[Mt. Silver|Silver Cave]] [[Pokémon Center]] is to {{rt|28}}, thus making it the closest {{m|Fly}} destination to the border.

*Of all towns where the player starts, it is the only one to not have a connecting route to the north, but instead to the east and west.

**This is also the only town where the player begins his or her journey to not be connected to a route whose number ends in 1.

*The name of this town started the running theme in which the player's starting town is named after a plant.

*The first gameplay footage of {{game|HeartGold and SoulSilver|s}} depicts New Bark Town, featuring {{ga|Gold}} being followed around by a {{p|Chikorita}} (presumably his starter) in a manner similar to [[Amity Square]] in [[Sinnoh]]'s trio of games or {{p|Pikachu}} in {{game|Yellow}}. The geography of New Bark Town, while updated, has not changed, and wisps of wind blow westward. The player's eventual [[rival]], {{ga|Silver}}, lurks outside of Elm's lab as he did in Generation II.
