This card's true first appearance was in the Japanese Pokémon VS expansion and in the unofficial English Tyranitar Half Deck for the 2001 Tropical Mega Battle. The card was translated under the tentative name of Pokémon Reverse. It was then officially released as part of the Expedition Base Set, originating from the Japanese Base Expansion Pack.
This card also appeared in the VS set, which was never released outside of Japan; the card was translated under the name of Pokémon Reverse for that set. It was also reprinted in the EX Ruby & Sapphire, EX FireRed & LeafGreen, and EX Unseen Forces sets with new artwork by Hiromichi Sugiyama.  The EX Ruby & Sapphire print is famous for seemingly mangling the effect, since it read as follows:

It was reprinted in EX Ruby & Sapphire, first originating from the Japanese Torchic Constructed Starter Deck, with new artwork by Hiromichi Sugiyama, which is famous for seemingly mangling the intended effect (see above). The change caused quite a stir, as if the effect had been changed from being a "flip for Base Set" to "flip for half a Gym Challenge". An errata was ultimately issued so that the card was treated more like the Expedition print with a slight tweak for 2-on-2 play. The reprinted versions that appeared in EX FireRed & LeafGreen and EX Unseen Forces featured the adjusted text.

Pokémon Reversal was later reclassified in Japan as an Item card during the HeartGold & SoulSilver Series, though the English Trainer cards did not adopt this naming convention until after this card's latest print. HeartGold & SoulSilver featured new artwork by Wataru Kawahara, and the Japanese Battle Starter Decks featured yet another new illustration by Hideaki Hakozaki.

This caused quite a stir, as if the effect had been changed from being a "flip for Gust" to "flip for half a Gym Challenge". An errata was ultimately issued so that the card now was treated more like the Expedition print with a slight tweak for 2-on-2 play, as follows:

Trivia
Trivia
This card's HeartGold & SoulSilver print's effect matches that of Emerging Powers's errata. Pokémon Catcher is a card later released in the Emerging Powers expansion, and given errata at the start of the XY Series.
