All [[Pokémon Coordinator]]s who have earned five {{pkmn|Contest}} [[Ribbon]]s from the [[Sinnoh]] [[region]] are eligible to enter.

In ''[[DP041|A Stand-Up Sit-Down!]]'', Zoey mentioned that the Sinnoh Grand Festival will have a [[Double Performance|double performance]] round. In [[DP163]] [[Marian]] announced that it would be held at [[Lake Valor]], the site of the most recent [[Wallace Cup]].

The Grand Festival started in [[DP174]], and like all Sinnoh Contests, [[Marian]] is the announcer. Instead of the usual three judges, the Grand Festival has six judges in attendance. The Sinnoh Grand Festival began in ''[[DP174|Last Call — First Round!]]'' and ended in ''[[DP177|A Grand Fight for Winning!]]''. Like all [[Sinnoh]] [[Pokémon Contest]]s, [[Marian]] was the [[Contest announcer|announcer]]. During {{an|Dawn}}'s participation in the event, 108 {{pkmn|Coordinator}}s were entered. For the tournament, she and her [[rival]]s wore new costumes.


Due to there being so many entrants to the Grand Festival, the appeal stage was divided up onto three stages; the Red Stage, the Green Stage, and the Blue Stage. Each coordinator performed on one of the stages for two of the judges. Each judging team consisting of a Nurse Joy alongside Mr. Contesta (Blue Stage), Mr. Sukizo (Green Stage), or Fantina (Red Stage). The stages can be modified for each coordinator (for instance, when Zoey appealed with her {{p|Gastrodon}} and {{p|Lumineon}} the stage transformed into a pool which was perfect for the two {{type2|Water}} Pokémon to use). Once everyone had appealed, the Top 32 coordinators progressed to the second round.
Before the start of the competition, a welcoming party is held where Coordinators can interact with one another. {{si|Rhonda}} from ''[[Sinnoh Now]]'' provides live coverage of the party, interviewing attendants about their expectations for the event.


The second round marked the beginning of the Grand Festival's battle rounds marking some changes to the layout. First, now there were only 32 coordinators left the battles were conducted on a single stage, and also the amount of judges had been reduced from six to four (Mr. Contesta, Mr. Sukizo, Nurse Joy and Fantina). Apart from that, the battles proceeded in a normal contest manner, with each coordinator using two Pokémon in their battles. Any coordiantor who ran out of points, had their Pokémon [[Unable to battle|knocked out]] or had the least amount of points once the time ran out were eliminated from the Grand Festival.

Due to the large number of participants, the Performance Stage of the Sinnoh Grand Festival takes place in three different stages; the Red Stage, the Green Stage, and the Blue Stage. There is one day of rest between the first and second rounds. The second round marks the beginning of the Grand Festival's [[Contest Battle]]s with some changes to the layout. The 32 Coordinators are divided in four blocks of eight contestants each, and the winner of each block advances to the semifinals.
 
Unlike the Performance Stage, in which three Coordinators simultaneously deliver a performance in separate stages, all matches are conducted on a single battlefield. Also, the amount of judges is reduced from six to four. All Coordinators are matched-up randomly by a computer up to the semifinals. Coordinators who run out of points, have the judges rule {{DL|Fainting|Battle Off}} for their Pokémon, or have the least amount of points once time runs out are eliminated from the Grand Festival.
