The player starts the game outside of Tiny Woods. This is where they meet the Pokémon that will become their partner, and is where the two receive their first rescue job. They are asked by {{DL|List of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team characters|Butterfree}} to rescue her baby {{mdc|Caterpie|1}}, who has fallen into a fissure in the dungeon and cannot get out. After completing this job, the player and their partner receive an {{DL|Berry|In the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series|Oran Berry}}, Pecha Berry, and a Rawst Berry.
