The anime makes it VERY clear when a Pokémon is a female, either by its appearance, or it behavior (look at Ash's Chikorita). | |||
Moreover, the anime NEVER stated that a Pokémon whose gender hadn't been previously revealed, is female, at it would be too bizarre. | |||
If they didn't bother at making a Pokémon, girly-like, then the Pokémon is EXTREMELY likely to be a male (again, I have yet to see a case where the opposite happened).
