::When you say it substitutes, do you mean as in SUBST: templating? In that case, it's not allowed, mainly for two reasons; one, it's still technically using a template for your signature (albeit a less harmful one), and two, there's an unofficial coding limit for signatures, and if it doesn't fit in your [[Special:Preferences|Preferences]], then chances are, it's too much coding for one signature.
