Welcome

Welcome to Bulbapedia, JamesTFord1987!

Here are a few links to help you get started:

The Manual of Style, or MoS, outlines the format of all pages on Bulbapedia.

Our friendly team of staff are here to help! Talk to them if you have any questions or problems with Bulbapedia.

On talk pages, please sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~), or by using the "Your signature with a timestamp" (button_sig.png) button at the top of the edit window.

On Bulbapedia, the ability to edit personal userpages is a privilege. Per our userpage policy, this must be earned by first making constructive edits to the mainspace. Once you can, remember to keep userspace edits (edits to User:JamesTFord1987) to a minimum.

For a complete list of policies and editing advice, please see the Welcome Portal.
Thank you, and have a good time editing here!

Thanks Anyway

I have to edit the already extensive encyclopedia on Pokemon before I can edit my userpage and signature? I can't post a riddle on my user page? I can't remove the welcome? Talk pages are not used for talking? I can't list a friends name on my page? I can't post simple "fan-fiction" on my page? Last time I checked, granted it's been a while, these encyclopedia's were meant to be ran by the community. Admins are just people with a couple extra buttons and the responsibility of removing vandals/offensive material. Bulbapedia has been implemented as nothing short of a dictatorship only ran by the hand picked administrators. I understand rules must be kept in order to keep some level of sanity, but wow. This is what happens when you give children authority. If this is truly a server issue than maybe that's the first sign to bump up to a better server, one that can meet your needs. I can't sign this because I can't edit my signature page. --JamesTFord.

Can't edit the already-extensive wiki? You sure? We've got a lot of articles that still suck stylistically. Look at literally anything connected to Hoenn. Anything at all. They're AWFUL.
As for removing the welcome, that is kept there as a historic notice, so we don't have to go trudging through your history page to see how long ago we first said hi. As for talk pages, no, they're not used for talking. That's why we have a forum and there exist IM programs. Each revision adds more data to the site, and we can't have users goofing off, saying "LOL HAY" every ten seconds to some idiot they know. As for friends lists, if you were here in 2008 you'd see how much of a pain in the ass users were. People hardly edited, instead focusing on making mazes out of their userpages. Whoopedoo!
Fan fiction goes in places designated for it. Currently it's handled on the forums, but soon we're moving into a CMS-style way of doing it. Remember, Bulbapedia may get 95% of the traffic of Bulbagarden.net, but we're hardly all there is on the site.
The encyclopedia is run by the community, but every community has a few guidelines. You wouldn't go blasting down Main Street in a small town at 50 miles per hour and tell the cops "but the speed limit in my hometown is 55" when they pull you over.
As for giving "children" authority, I wasn't aware that you still qualified as a child, assuming 1987 is the year of your birth. The administration here is made up 90% of people who are either older than you or the same age. And signature pages are for the weak. Put your signature in the code box in your preferences. And no images allowed. TTEchidna 09:52, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Hi James. I'm going to chime in and say that I was in a similar position to you when I turned up here two years ago. You can see this for yourself by delving through my best-left-forgotten talk archives.
Clearly, you're familiar with the wiki process, but the Bulbapedia community runs differently to most other wiki communities I've been involved with. I put this down to it being a site largely frequented by children; as such, these children need to know what they can and can't do. This has also led to the evolution of the administrator role when comparing Bulbapedia to other wikis: because of the young demographic of the site, we do need to step in and lay an authoritative hand in places. I assure you that the administration is not just a group of children (this old fart is twentyfour or something ridiculous like that; at nearly almost just about 20, I'm one of the youngest staff members) and that we're not terribly exclusive. In fact, we've just finished up a self-nomination phase for new staff members.
If you need help finding something to do, we've got a list of wanted pages, many articles needing improvement, and more stubs than you can shake a stick at. I look forward to working with you. —darklordtrom 10:29, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
I may have overreacted a bit. I'm not interested in fan-fiction or riddles, I just simply wanted to copy/paste my user page but instead found a list of things I couldn't do. I retract the children comment, I'm actually embarrassed about that as I started to act like I was twelve myself blogging away. I suppose a site like this does attract a large amount of hooligan's and needs a certain level of protection to avoid daily bans. As for the signature, I just wanted to create the sig page to avoid the extra wiki code that pops up when signing pages.--JamesTFord1987 11:06, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
Signature templates are banned (see here) because they draw extra power from the server when the page loads. And we honestly can't afford for each of the 600+ users who are online and editing every day to have a server-draining signature template. Just code it regularly. And for the record... we run five servers. Being popular sucks.
I'm glad we see more eye-to-eye on the other issues. You go kill stubs now? ;) The more you kill, the quicker you can get to that userpage. —darklordtrom 11:20, 5 May 2010 (UTC)
