Pewter City
1 is a peaceful, country road that leads north from Pallet Town to Viridian City. The path is riddled with patches of tall grass and one-way ledges that make northward travel difficult. It is not yet possible to catch any of the wild Pokémon here, but it is still good to battle them to earn valuable Experience Points.

Pewter City is a quiet city nestled in the northern mountains. Local attractions include the Pewter Museum of Science and the Pewter Gym. The Gym Leader is looking for challengers, and the kid blocking the city's east exit will drag the player to the Gym if they try to leave. This is the second city to sell Potions (Viridian City sells them once Oak's Parcel is delivered to him), so stock up at the Poké Mart before challenging the Gym.

Pewter Museum of Science
The Pewter Museum of Science is located on the north side of the city. It hosts a wide range of artifacts and exhibits, with a focus on fossil excavation and space exploration. Admission to the main building is pdollar50 for a child's ticket. The laboratory next door is closed to the public, but return later to receive a valuable item from one of the scientists inside.

The Pewter Gym officially specializes in the Rock type. Bulbasaur's Vine Whip and Squirtle's Water Gun can inflict serious damage on each of the four opposing Pokémon. Despite being a Fire type, Charmander can still hold its own with Metal Claw. Alternatively, a Mankey from 22 or a Butterfree from Viridian Forest can be a big help, as Rock Pokémon are vulnerable to Fighting moves, and the Gym's Pokémon have a difficult time against special attacks like Confusion. Avoid bringing Flying and Electric Pokémon such as Pidgey or Pikachu.
Viridian City is a small, nature-loving city that is enveloped in green year-round. It is located between 1 to the south, 2 to the north, and 22 to the west.

Pokémon Center
bordercolor=rock color dark|
The first building you will see is the Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and eliminate any status ailments they may have. Each facility also has a PC for Trainers to use, where they can access their Pokémon storage and item storage. As Trainers may only carry six Pokémon with them at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you find a Pokémon Center.

Poké Mart
prize=pdollar1400|
Another shop sits to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. This is the local Poké Mart; these stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. It is a good idea to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey.

Brock awards the player the Boulder, which gives a slight Attack boost during battle, and allows the use of Flash in the field. He also hands over 39 as a prize.

With the Pewter Gym defeated, the next stop is Cerulean City to the east. Stock up on Potions and Poké Balls before leaving for 3. Upon leaving Pewter City, the player is stopped by one of Oak's aides. He delivers a package from Mom, which turns out to be a pair of Running Shoes. By holding the B Button, the player can travel faster than normal. While not as fast as the Bicycle, it is still faster than walking.
Special Delivery
When you step inside, the shopkeeper recognizes you as someone from Pallet Town and calls you over to the counter. It seems that Professor Oak had ordered something that was recently delivered. The shopkeeper hands Oak's Parcel to you and asks that you take it to him. The man is adamant, so you will not be able to make any purchases until the delivery is made.

Pokémon Academy
The Pokémon academy in the city's center teaches inexperienced Trainers about the basics of battle. A blackboard in the front of the room describes the five Status condition that can affect a Pokémon.

3 runs off to the east, ending at the east side of 4 and the entrance to Mt. Moon. There are more than a few Trainers to fight along the way, so it may be necessary to rest up in Pewter City before venturing into the cave.

Deliver Oak's Parcel, a custom Poké Ball, to him and Blue arrives a moment later. The professor has a request for each of you: take the Pokédex he invented and use it to gather information on all the Pokémon in the world. This handheld device is a high-tech encyclopedia that records data on every Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of every species. It was Oak's dream to do this himself, but his advanced age means that he must rely on the two of you instead. To help get you started, he gives five Poké Balls to each of you.

Visit your rival's house before leaving town and speak to his sister, Daisy, to receive a Town Map.

A Pokémon Center stands near the entrance to Mt. Moon. Inside is a shady man that offers to sell the player a Magikarp for pdollar500. The fish can do nothing but Splash until level 15, but evolves into the much stronger Gyarados at level 20. This offer allows the player to obtain the powerful sea snake earlier than normal, but Magikarp can soon be hooked for free with the right fishing rod.
Viridian City
With Oak's Parcel delivered, it is now possible to purchase items at the Poké Mart, and the old man that had blocked the path northward is feeling better now that he has had his coffee. When you pass him, he notices your Pokédex and gives a demonstration of how to catch a Pokémon. Afterward, he gives you the Teachy TV, a portable device tuned to a TV show hosted by his grandson. This program, called the Poké Dude Show, teaches its viewers the basics of being a Pokémon Trainer.

{| align="center"
At this point, you may proceed north to Route 2, or make an optional detour westward to 22 first.

Mt. Moon
Mt. Moon is a large cave set deep inside the mountains. There are many Trainers inside who are looking to battle. Many cave-dwelling Pokémon, like Zubat and Paras, can also be found here.

Little has changed since your fight in Oak's Lab, but he has since added a Pidgey to his team. Collect 09 and the Parlyz Heal to the west, then follow the tunnel around and climb down the nearest ladder.

If the player chose Squirtle:
The presence of a Team Rocket Grunt means that the criminal gang is up to no good here. Grab the Star Piece from the platform and take the ladder back to the first floor.

1F
To the south are two more Trainers. There are also three items lying around, including a Potion, a Rare Candy, and an Escape Rope. Go north and climb down the next ladder.

B2F (northeast)
After the battle, be sure to heal your Pokémon and stock up on Poké Balls, then continue on to 2.
Beat up the second Rocket Grunt, then pick up 46 on the platform. Check the boulder for a hidden Ether and return to the main floor.

1F
If you managed to defeat Blue before catching any Pokémon and have no Poké Balls on-hand, you can return to Pallet Town and speak to Professor Oak to receive 5 Poké Balls.
Continue along the tunnel to the northwest corner of the cave. Grab the Moon Stone in the corner and take the ladder to the basement.

B2F (outer area)
Route 2 (West)
Follow the winding tunnel to the northwest, where Super Nerd Miguel claims both fossils lying here as his own. Defeat him, and he lets the player pick one of the two. Like with the Old Amber, the scientists on Cinnabar Island can resurrect a prehistoric Pokémon from each fossil. The Helix Fossil will become an Omanyte, while the Dome Fossil will become a Kabuto; both are Pokémon. Climb the final ladder to reach the exit.

Route 4 (east)
2 runs northward from Viridian City to Pewter City. Much of the route's west side is occupied by a large maze of trees known as Viridian Forest. Cut block access to the east side for now. Head through the gate to enter the forest, a whole new area with new Pokémon to catch!
4 is a one-way path that leads down from the mountains. Pick up 05 and the hidden Great Ball before jumping the ledge outside Cerulean City. A pair of Black Belts can be found training on the western hill. These men are Move Tutor, and each wishes to pass on the knowledge of a certain move. The man on the left teaches Mega Punch, while the man on the right teaches Mega Kick. Like the other Move Tutors, these moves can be taught only once.
