Temple of the Sea

Where does Meowth state that diamond and pearl would be great names for games? --Theryguy512 12:45, 22 September 2007 (UTC)

Electric Tale of Pikachu

"To Games: This series is derived from the anime, which is in turn based off the world and events of the main game series." If no one has any objections, I'm gonna go ahead and remove this part. The article should be limited to direct references, not round-about ones. --Dual 22:58, 29 February 2008 (UTC) (Sorry, forgot to sign)

No, no. Leave it be. --Theryguy512 01:33, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
Why? --Dual 01:46, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
I agree in removing it. A reference to a reference? Come on.--Loveはドコ? (talk contribs) 03:02, 1 March 2008 (UTC)
I already went ahead with removing it. --Dual 05:20, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

B-button league

These guys feature in a DP episode and all members will only use unevolved pokemon, a direct reference to pressing the B-button to prevent evolution; shouldn't this be included. (as a side note in the same episode, and in some others, the controls that Mewoth uses for Team Rocket's machines closely resemble either the Wii controller or nunchuck attachment, should this also be included?)

Riley and Sir Aaron

Doesn't it make more sense to say that Aaron was based off Riley? Riley's design was most likely was almost done,or done, when the movie was beginning to be made. Also,Aaron has a Lucario, like Riley, and they may have gotten the idea of Aaron being Lucario's master from Riley. Nintendo has a habit of leaking out info, and they probably told them about Riley Lovely Rose 18:34, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Anime-related events

Just dumping this here until I can get around to incorporating it into the article all nicely

I shall finish this later Yamiidenryuu (talk) 15:49, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Bird Keeper Jose (GS)

In Gold & Silver, one of the callers that can be registered, Bird Keeper Jose, sometimes calls the player instead of someone called "Kaz". (quote: Hello? This is JOSE... Wait, you're not KAZ! Sorry, wrong number.) Is this a reference to Kaz from the Indigo League anime? Since I can't find any other in-game NPCs named Kaz. Shawn (talk) 11:18, 18 March 2019 (UTC)

Differentiating between cross-canon "references" and cross-canon "nods"

The current page is a bit of a jumble of multiple different types of "references" from across canon, due in large part to the multiple definitions of the term. However, I think it would be prudent to make a particular distinction between two primary kinds of "reference" that may occur, as I believe both have significant value to encyclopedic records, and at the moment one is being lost in favor of the other. For the sake of clarity, I am going to use the terms "reference" and "nod" to differentiate between these, though I am open to any other terminology that would be preferred.

The distinction I am looking to make is between "nods" -- inconsequential details in a medium that reference, or subtly nod towards, another medium -- and "references" as in direct acknowledgements of events that only occurred in another medium. For example, the Team Rocket Grunts' designs in G/S/C resembling Cassidy and Jessie would be a nod, as this does not have any bearing on the plot of the games nor indicates that the anime characters of Cassidy and Jessie exist in the canon of G/S/C, but still "nods" towards them. However, Steven Stone referencing battling Rayquaza alongside Alain in the Delta Episode would be a reference, as this makes canon to the games events that have only been seen in the anime.

The former case is far more common and currently make up the vast majority of the page, which means examples of the latter case are harder to find in the list. This is a shame, because both types of reference are fascinating and noteworthy in their own unique ways. I think it would be a boon to the readability of the page and the enjoyment of readers if the page was reorganized, or potentially split, to make it easier to find these vastly different cases.
