Rhyhorn (Japanese: サイホーン Sihorn) is a dual-type Ground/Rock Pokémon.

It evolves into Rhydon starting at level 42, who evolves into Rhyperior when traded holding a Protector.

Biology

Physiology

Rhyhorn is a small rhinocerous-like creature with a body of gray, rocky plates. Rhyhorn has four short legs and and triangle-shaped head with a single, short horn.

Gender differences

A female has a shorter horn.

Special abilities

Rhyhorn most well known method of attack is to charge straight into things. A charging Rhyhorn can knock a trailer flying. Rhyhorn can also use various Rock and Ground attacks. Rhyhorn can learn elemental attacks, but these types of attacks aren't very strong when used by Rhyhorn (save for the elemental fangs). Rhyhorn is one of the few Pokémon capable of learning Megahorn.

Behavior

One can say that Rhyhorn has rocks for brains because it can only remember one thing at a time. A perfect example of this is whenever a Rhyhorn starts charging, it'll forget why it did so in the first place.

Habitat

Rhyhorn live in open plains and mountain ranges.

Minor Appearances

Rhyhorn first debuted in The Flame Pokémon-athon, entering a race with its trainer. Rhyhorn jumped onto a stone but they sank, and Rhyhorn and his trainer were eliminated from the race.

Rhyhorn appeared in the banned episode The Legend of Dratini. Ash attempted to capture it, but it got away.

At the start of Bulbasaur's Mysterious Garden, Ash's Bulbasaur was battling a Rhyhorn belonging to a Hiker.

A Rhyhorn owned by Corey was one of the Pokémon that was captured and cloned by Mewtwo in Mewtwo Strikes Back. The Rhyhorn clone was seen again in Mewtwo Returns, having by this point bred a baby Rhyhorn.

The first Pokémon that Ash and co. saw at Pinkan Island in In the Pink was a Rhyhorn.

A Rhyhorn that belonged to Noland was seen in Numero Uno Articuno.

A Rhyhorn charged at Ash's Donphan after it had angered it by accident in Odd Pokémon Out.

A Rhyhorn was amongst the group of Pokémon used to attack Dawn, Brock, Officer Jenny, and Solana in Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu! Part Two.

A Rhyhorn appeared in Camping It Up!.

Stadium 2 It is inept at turning because of its four short legs. It can only charge and run in one direction.

Trivia

  • Rhyhorn has the same cry as Charizard.
  • Despite its species being the "Spikes Pokémon," and it being part Template:Type2, Rhyhorn cannot learn the move Spikes.
  • Rhyhorn evolves at level 42, later than any other basic stage Pokémon by level. It shares this trait with Snorunt, however, Snorunt evolves into another Pokémon with a different method.
  • Since they are included in the Sinnoh Dex in Platinum, Rhyhorn and Rhydon appeared in every Regional Pokédex.
  • A Rhyhorn was the only shiny Pokémon found by The Speed Gamers during their 2008 Christmas Marathon.
  • Rhyhorn's Generation IV Pokédex entries state that its tackles can topple buildings. However, Rhyhorn cannot learn Tackle via any means.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver if the Player trades A Bonsly to Brock he will give you a Rhyhorn that knows Thunder Fang.
  • In Generation II, Rhyhorn's shiny sprite resembles the pink rhyhorn.

Origin

Its design appears to be inspired by a rhinoceros.

Name origin

Rhyhorn's name may be a combination of rhinoceros and horn. It may also be based on a mineral called rhyolite, which explains its types. Its Japanese name is a combination of 犀 sai (rhinoceros) and horn.

In other languages

  • German: Rihorn
  • French: Rhinocorne - Combination of rhinocéros (rhinoceros) and corne (horn).
  • Korean: 뿔카노 Ppulkano
  • Chinese: 鐵甲犀牛
