Still in route to Veilstone City, the gang have stopped in another city on the way. While his friends and their Pokémon enjoy a picnic, Ash and Turtwig are still trying to master Energy Ball. Turtwig has been able to master forming the Energy Ball, but is still having trouble directing it. However the training and picnic are put on hold when several shadows fly overhead. Looking up, the gang see several Gligar being led by a larger Pokémon, which suddenly start swooping down at them. The group quickly flees, and the attackers steal all the food from the picnic. Ash has Turtwig try an Energy Ball against the leader, but once again it is misdirected and misses its target. Ash therefore tries a Razor Leaf against the numerous Gligar, but they're all too quick. For safety, all of the Pokémon are recalled into their Poké Balls (apart from Turtwig, Dawn and of course Pikachu).  Ash makes sure his friends are OK, and Brock identifies the Pokémon as Gligar and the larger one as Gliscor. Dawn looks up Gligar in her Pokédex, and then Ash looks up Gliscor in his, which identifies Gliscor as Gligar's evolved form.

Just then an Ice Beam shoots towards Gliscor, which sends it flying. Ash and the gang look across and see that it's come from Paul and his Weavile. Paul then sends out his Paul which sends all of the Gligar fleeing. A few attempt to attack Murkrow but it easily dodges. A strong wind starts, and Gliscor orders the group of Gligar to leave. However, while almost all leave, a single Gligar is too busy eating an apple to notice the others leaving. After quickly scoffing down the apple and making a face at the gang, it tries to take off but the attempt is misjudged and it falls onto Ash. After getting off, it finds itself surrounded by the angry stares of Pikachu, Piplup and Turtwig. It quickly leaves to rejoin its group.

Paul recalls his Pokémon, and mentions that the Gliscor lives up to its reputation. Ash asks Paul if he's there to capture the Gliscor, but Paul is apathetic as usual and tells the others to keep out of his way before he walks off. Just then Officer Jenny and Nurse Joy turn up (much to Brock's usual happiness). It turns out that this isn't the first time people's food has been stolen, but just then Brock begins his usual declaration of love. Luckily Brock is there with a Poison Jab to stop him making too much of an idiot of himself before dragging him away.
