Seaking (Japanese: アズマオウ Azumao) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Goldeen at level 33.

Biology

Physiology

Seaking resembles a koi or goldfish, as it is a big orange colored fish with white and black markings. It also has a horn on its head, 2 big dark eyes, and pink lips with 2 small, sharp fangs.

A female has a smaller horn.

Ash Ketchum, Misty, and Professor Oak have owned Seaking in the past, though Ash and Misty released theirs only a short time after capturing it.

Juan also owns a Seaking, which was used in a Gym Battle against Ash in The Great Eight Fate. Juan's Seaking was able to block electrical attacks with Horn Drill and send them back at its opponent.

Generation I Red In the autumn spawning season, they can be seen swimming powerfully up rivers and creeks. Blue Yellow It is the male's job to make a nest by carving out boulders in a stream using the horn on its head. Stadium In the autumn, they travel up rivers to spawn. In other seasons, they make and live in their own nests.
Generation II Gold During spawning season, Seaking gather from all over, coloring the rivers a brilliant red. Sapphire Seaking is very protective of its eggs. The male and female will take turns patrolling around their nest and eggs. The guarding of eggs by these Pokémon goes on for over a month. Emerald It punches holes in boulders on stream-beds. This is a clever innovation that prevents its eggs from being attacked or washed away by the current. FireRed The horn on its head is sharp like a Template:M2. It bores a hole in a boulder to make its nest. LeafGreen In the autumn spawning season, they can be seen swimming powerfully up rivers and creeks.

Trivia

• "Neptune", the god of the sea of Roman mythology, was Seaking's prototype name.
• In its Red/Blue/Green sprites, its horn looks like a drill and is twice as long as normal.
• Seaking is the subject of a meme on the *chan sites, known as "F*** YEAH SEAKING", in which it destroys things. Many declare it a forced meme, and use Mudkip as its remedy. Ex.[1]

• If Seaking is based upon "sea" and "king", and Goldeen "queen of the sea", then a queen is evolving into a king.

• Seaking and Goldeen are the only Pokémon that can learn Waterfall through leveling up. This makes it one of few Pokémon released to be able to learn an HM move by level-up.

• Seaking, Staryu, and Starmie are three of six total Pokémon in the original Kanto Dex who are clustered together and have the first letter of their names match without being in the same evolutionary chain (although Staryu and Starmie are). The other set of three is Electrode, Exeggcute and Exeggutor (although again, Exeggcute and Exeggutor are in the same evolutionary chain).

• Despite being called SEAking, Seaking, like real life goldfish, are found in fresh water.
  • In the Pal Park, it is found in the Pond Area.

Origin

It may just be based on a goldfish. The horn part may be based on Matsya, an avatar that the hindu god Brahma assumed, which is sometimes depicted as a fish with a horn.

Name origin

Seaking's name is simply a combination of sea and king (seeking?). Its Japanese name may be based on 小豆鱒 azukimasu, rock cod and 魔王 ma-ō, devil king. Interestingly enough, its Japanese name may also be taken to literally mean 東王 azuma-ō, East king. Furthermore, an アズマニシキ azumanishiki is a kind of goldfish.
