In the anime

Arcanine and its pre-evolution, Growlithe, have often been seen being used as police dogs.

Gary Oak has an Arcanine. The first time it was seen was in The Battle of the Badge.

Ash battled an Arcanine in Fire and Ice. This Arcanine was under the ownership of Pete Pebbleman and was his final Pokémon. Despite the type disadvantage, Pete's Arcanine easily defeated Ash's Kingler by dodging its Bubble attack and using Dragon Rage. Pikachu managed to defeat the Arcanine with a Thunderbolt attack after the Ice Field melted due to Arcanine's Fire Blast.

In The Stolen Stones, two trainers named Ramona and Keegan each had an Arcanine.

Tucker's Arcanine from Tactics Theatrics

In On Cloud Arcanine, Drew and May wanted to capture an Arcanine for a Pokémon Contest. When it was discovered that the Legendary Pokémon had a litter of Growlithe puppies to take of, the two rivals decided to leave Arcanine alone.

In Tactics Theatrics, Dome Ace Tucker used Arcanine and Swampert to battle against Ash's Swellow and Corphish.

In Mutiny in the Bounty, Officer Jenny used an Arcanine to track down Pokémon Hunter J.

An Arcanine appeared in DP086.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Blaine is seen to have an Arcanine from a flashback in Template:PSV, when he recalls a confrontation with Team Rocket.

Crystal has an Arcanine, whom she uses for transport at times. It is able to hit targets fast and hard using its ExtremeSpeed. As explained in a flashback in Template:PSV, Arcanine was a wild Pokémon from Mt. Mortar whose left eye was injured five years ago. The cause is revealed to be a Larvitar prankster, whom Crystal manages to capture.

Trivia

  • Arcanine originally had the name "Blaze".
  • Arcanine has the highest base stats of any Pokémon that only has evolved once.
  • Arcanine has the highest base stat average of any non-legendary and non-pseudo-legendary Pokémon.
  • Because of its high stats, its species, and the fact that it was illustrated in an ancient slab along with the Legendary Birds in the second episode, it can be assumed that Arcanine was originally planned to be part of the legendary trio in first generation games; possibly even the birds' trio master.
  • Arcanine can be seen as a parallel to Ninetales. Both of them are Generation I Pokémon whose only evolutionary event utilizes a Fire Stone from their unevolved forms. Ninetales is exclusive to Pokémon LeafGreen while Arcanine is to Pokémon FireRed, Arcanine has a 75% chance of being male while Ninetales has a 75% of being female, and they are both in the Ground Egg Group. Additionally, both can have Flash Fire as their ability.

Origin

Arcanine is based on Japanese シーサー shisa, or koma-inu. They are mythical creatures that take inspiration from lions, tigers, and dogs. Statues of them in pairs are used as guardians and to invite good luck.

Name origin

Arcanine's name is a combination of arcane, meaning mysterious, and canine, meaning dog. Windi may refer to wind, because this Pokémon runs like a wind as if it was flying and at great speed.
