In the core series games
Zach is the player's opponent in their Z-A Royale promotion match to Rank Y. His wish upon reaching Rank A in the Z-A Royale is to abolish all forms of transportation in Lumiose City, except for taxis. Despite this, Zach is infamous for having suffered many promotion match losses in Rank Z, earning him the nickname Le Z Éternel (Japanese: 永遠のZ Eternal Z), with his loss to the player being his 100th recorded loss.
While his skill as a Trainer is dubious, Zach prides himself as a safe and effective driver, boasting no accidents or violations in his tenure with Lumi Cab,[1] and used to race in endurance races before changing careers.[2]

Trivia
- Zach is the only Z-A Royale promotional match opponent who does not add any new Pokémon to his team in rematches.
- This also makes him the only opponent in Infinite Z-A Royale reward matches to have neither five or six Pokémon on his team.
- Zach's character is very similar to Glass Joe from Nintendo's Punch-Out!! series. Both characters have unfounded self-confidence and an initial 99-loss streak, and end up acquiring a 100th loss after the player defeats them. Additionally, Glass Joe is from Paris, France, while Zach lives in Lumiose City, which is based on Paris.
- In the Legends: Z-A trailer SPECIAL REPORT: The Truth About Malamar, a taxi driver resembling Zach appears, even wearing the same clothes.
