Verdant Guardian (Japanese: 深緑の監視者) was a story event in Pokémon Masters EX. It was focused on the sync pair Sygna Suit Serena & Zygarde.

The "Sygna Suit Serena Master Fair Scout" gave players an increased chance of recruiting Sygna Suit Serena & Zygarde from the beginning of the event to April 14, 2022.

During this event, players could earn Event Vouchers O from battles that could be redeemed in the shop. All battles could be challenged an unlimited number of times except Daily Extreme Battle 1, which could only be challenged once per day. Extra vouchers were automatically exchanged with coins once the event was finished.

The player could battle using Sygna Suit Serena & Zygarde to obtain +0.6× bonus vouchers; Clemont & Heliolisk or Lysandre & Yveltal to obtain +0.4× bonus vouchers; and Kukui & Lycanroc, Hop & Zamazenta, or any other sync pair with the Kalos theme skill to obtain +0.2× bonus vouchers.

This event featured the Battle Challenge, where players were challenged to defeat a team of strong opponents. Players could complete event missions by clearing these areas with teams using various theme skills, earning medals and other rewards.

In addition, players could earn a medal for completing the first five story areas in the event.

While most story areas in the event were unlocked by completing the preceding battle, the story area Guardian of the Ecosystem could only be unlocked by collecting 10 Zygarde Cells in the other story areas.

The special event A Strange Specimen was a prelude to this event.

Professor Sycamore	Fascinating, right? I think we should do more investigating to figure out what it is! This may have something to do with the rumor that Hoopa has brought Pokémon to Pasio.

Serena	Oh, are you looking for Growlithe, too?
???	N-no! Hoping I don't run into it, actually...

Professor Sycamore	Zygarde?! Doesn't look like it wants to attack us.
Serena	What should we do, Professor?
Professor Sycamore	It's not aggressive... And the fact that it's not leaving your side must mean it wants to follow you. Why don’t we head back into town for now?
(Serena and the player leave with Zygarde)
Professor Sycamore	Zygarde... First, Xerneas and Yveltal showed up on Pasio, and now Zygarde's here. That makes the third Legendary Pokémon from Kalos...
A few days later, Professor Sycamore called Serena, Calem, and <player> together to meet up with him again.

Serena	Sorry I'm late. I was walking here with Zygarde, but it kept getting distracted.
Calem	I don't think I've seen you wear that outfit before, Serena. Is it new?
Serena	Yeah! I thought I'd change things up since I'm hanging out with Zygarde! I even did my hair a little different, to look more grown-up!
Calem	It looks really cool on you. And I think it all comes together really well!
Serena	chuckle Thanks! All right! Shall we go meet up with the professor?
(Transition to Professor Bellis's Lab)
Professor Sycamore	Hi! Thanks for coming. There are a few new things I've learned about Zygarde that I'd like to share with you. Those sparkly green things we were looking for are actually cells. They come together to form Zygarde’s body.
Serena	Really?!
Professor Sycamore	Depending on the number of cells it has collected within its body, it can transform into different forms. So if we're able to collect more of its cells than it has now, that should theoretically give Zygarde an immense amount of power! I'm talking even more power than Xerneas and Yveltal!
Calem	Seriously? Even more power than those two?
Professor Sycamore	According to legend, Zygarde monitors the ecosystem, neutralizing those who harm it. I suspect that's why it needs so much power—so it can ward off those threats.
Calem	Oh. But if its cells are scattered right now, that means its power is incomplete, right?
Professor Sycamore	Not exactly. In a pinch, it's able to gather its cells together if it needs to.
Serena	There must be a reason why it scattered its cells all over Pasio, then. If that's the case, I can help find all of Zygarde's cells, Professor! Maybe it's sick and can't call its cells together or something... If that's why Zygarde's sticking with me, then I can't just ignore it!
Professor Sycamore	Hm... Like I said earlier, Zygarde is a Pokémon that has great power hidden within itself. I'm not sure what would happen if it did collect all of its cells together in one place...
Serena	Please, Professor? If anything happens, I promise I'll calm it down!
Calem	We'll help her out, too, Professor. It'll be safer with three of us around, right?

Hop	Zygarde's a Pokémon that's made up of a bunch of cells, right? I'd heard rumors that it's been spotted in the Crown Tundra before, but this the first time I've actually seen one of its cells in person!
Serena	Oh, so you already knew all about it! No wonder you're Professor Sonia's assistant! Do you happen to know anything else?
Hop	Well...not really. But if Zygarde is a Legendary Pokémon that's shown up in Kalos, Alola, and even Galar... maybe a Pokémon Professor from Galar or Alola would know something about it! Er...Sonia's busy doing talks and presentations on her research, though.
Calem	Why don't we find a professor from Alola and ask them about it?
