Welcome

Welcome to Bulbapedia, Zeal!

As a new user, you may wish to learn a few things that will be useful in your editing:

 • For a basic overview of wiki code, see this page.
 • The manual of style is very important. Make sure to read it. It outlines all official policies of Bulbapedia.
 • The word Pokémon is spelled with a capital P and an accented é. The P, of course, is accessed easily by holding Shift and pressing the P key, while the é can be accessed using Alt + 130 or Alt + 0233 on a Windows computer, and Option + e, then e again on a Mac. Otherwise, you can click it in the character palette below the editbox.
 • The word Poké Ball is spelled as two words. The "Poké" part is identical to the four beginning letters in "Pokémon"; "Ball" is spelled with a captial B (which is, again, accessed by holding Shift and pressing the B key). The spelling "Pokéball" arises frequently, but is incorrect.
 • The word "you" and all forms of it should not be used on encyclopedic pages unless it is a quote from Pokémon media. Bulbapedia is an encyclopedia, not a walkthrough.
 • On talk pages, please sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
 • The use of link templates is official policy. For an explanation on their use, see the page on shortlinks.
 • If you happen to spot a vandal in the recent changes that has not been dealt with, please see this page for how to deal with it.
 • A list of pages that are linked to, but have not been created, can be found at this page. A list of short articles that may require more information can be found here, while a list of articles that need improvement can be found here.
 • A list of the admins that you can contact in case of a problem, can be found here.

Thank you, and have a good time editing here! KPF 16:10, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Please DO NOT categorise your User pages! TESHIGIGAS 17:01, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

You're kidding me right? --Zeal T / C 17:05, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
No. Only categorise new pages that are not in the User namespace. TESHIGIGAS 17:06, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Mind boggling stupidty ftw... I'll remove them and leave the user space in disarray. Just a heads up though, there are no policies or guidlines written for categories or the userspace in line with this, and user templates are violating it, even on your own page. So might be an idea to do fix that. --Zeal T / C 17:13, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Actually, the User Templates group users together. The whole I dea of the User namespace is so that User pages do not have to be categorised. At least that's what I've gathered! XD TESHIGIGAS 17:18, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
"breadcrumbs" being enabled in the userspace are no replacement for the categories, as they're parental navigation only. To achieve the same effect as categories, a user would have to manually update a list of their own pages, create a page for each listing of pages, and can't span multiple users. That the user templates group users together shouldn't be any exception to rule imo. User categories through structuring have no effect on the rest of the namespaces and their categories. *shrug* I'm just going along with whatever you're doing here though. Not looking for a place for me to start discussing wiki policies and management again >_>; --Zeal T / C 17:24, 29 February 2008 (UTC)
Well, at least you know what you're on about, unlike most of the new users that join... I've been here a year. But at least you know what you're doing. TESHIGIGAS 17:34, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Signature Policy

Actually, that is how we're dealing with templates lately, but you're absolutely right, it's not a good idea in your case. :D

Anyway, to the actual subject at hand. We've now got a Signature policy in action; your signature has two problems with the policy as it is currently. Namely, rule one, text-only (no images), and the no templates rule. First rule's easy to fix, second one, not so much. Obviously, your current signature's a bit too big coding-wise to fit anywhere other then in a template, so that's going to get in the way of that process a bit.

I can edit your signature page to remove the image; preferably, if you can manage a smaller signature as well, I'll just pop that into the template, and we can SUBST: it with no problems. Quick look at your signature makes it easy to see you should have no trouble figuring out the coding on that. :D

If you'd be so kind, could you change your signature to take up less space, and stop using the template? I know you can't edit your template at the moment, so just post whatever you come up with here, or on my talk page, or on the signature's talk page; I'll fix it right up for you.

Any other questions, let me know, I'll be happy to help out. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 08:21, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

Well i was expecting such a response. Though i was expecting to have to justify myself too.
On WoWWiki, sig templates are allowed, and i noticed when i came here, the sigs were mostly templated and contained many (unneccessary) images, so just tried to keep it low profile and neat. The reason i changed mine back and discouraged subst is, as you've realized, they can contain a good deal of markup and styling which you don't want editors to have to read through. Any changes to a sig once it's been included in a good deal of pages would always require a new sig to be made and modified via the SigX pointer. This is to prevent overloading the job queue, otherwise editors could bring a wiki to it's knees.
I noticed that i can't edit my sig (as well as it's pointer to circumvent subst) now, as you've said. Why is this? there's no right changes in the history and i've not seen an extension used that would automatically protect templates on inclusion :S
Anyways, if you're enforcing that new policy, then i'll comply with it, and switch to a new sig and reduce the amount of markup and styling. I can handle that myself simply with a new sig page anyway, not a problem. --Zeal T / C 08:49, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Okay, so apparently i can't even edit any user pages.. wtf? :S --Zeal T / C 08:51, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Maybe i should try reading the main page.. >_>; I'll get back to you. --Zeal T / C 08:51, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Hehe, nice to see another user with wiki experience.
Yeh, this site is already fairly easy to lag out, so the templates are a bit dangerous. SUBST: templates would be safe, but would also defeat the purpose...
Just let me know when you've got it all figured out. :D -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 10:19, 30 March 2008 (UTC)
Try something that's short and sweet (or at least won't show up with 100 lines of text). Maybe...Removing the background and borders? Optimatum♏Talk|10:29 30 Mar 2008
I'm liking that new sig you've got there. Just want to make a note; by removing unneeded spaces from the signature's coding, and replacing some of the codes with shorter ones, you can actually fit the entire signature right into your preferences, skipping the need for the SUBST: template entirely.
Having the SUBST: template isn't a problem on it's own, but the issue I think it'll bring up is that it makes it hard to tell which templates SUBST: and which ones don't. So chances are it would get deleted, if only by accident. For now, it would be a lot easier for you and me to just use the full code in preferences...
...oh, and here's the shortened coding I came up with, by the way.
<span title="Zeal Vurte" style="color:#90C;">Zeal</span> <span title="Talk" style="color:#999;">T</span> / <span title="Contributions" style="color:#999;">C</span>
Zeal T / C
Simply removed spaces in a few spots, where it didn't effect the end result; and shortened "Zeal's Talk" to "Talk", etc (seeing as people can easily figure out who's talk page they'll be going to). Tested that in my Preferences, so there's no coding errors either. Could you maybe use that instead?
I'll update your old signature template to match your new one while I'm here, too. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 05:35, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks. I don't really see the problem with the template existing, but either way, i've reduced the code further as you suggested and it fits in my raw fairly well (one character off what i wanted, to had to sacrifice :P). I've kept the &nbsp;'s as i don't want the signature splitting on line wraps. Keeping them means the signature should always wrap as a whole. I saved space elsewhere though, so np. --Zeal T / C 08:52, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Ah, that's what you use those for. Never really had to bother with those for my sig, of course. :D
There's no problem with the template just being there, per say, but for me, it's hard to keep track of who's using templates and who's subst:'ing templates. It's just a bit confusing in that regard; perhaps when all the templates have been dealt with, re-making one simply to SUBST: the coding won't be a big deal. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 10:20, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
User:Zeal/SigX isn't needed, is it? I just want to make sure before I delete it. -- Jïörüjï Ðērākō.>.cнаt^ 10:27, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
Nope, you're all clear to delete it now. Seeing as you've subst'ed my previous instances of the sig, you may as well delete User:Zeal/Sig too. --Zeal T / C 13:11, 31 March 2008 (UTC)
