The Alola region contains many myths and legends relating to its culture and history. Below are several written passages from the library of Malie City on Ula'ula Island; as well as other sources found in Pokémon Sun and Moon, and their enhanced versions, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.

Light of Alola

The Light of Alola is a book found in the Malie Library, originally owned by Acerola's father and family. It recaps the story of Solgaleo and Lunala presence in Alola. It is a part of Lillie's research on Nebby to learn more about its species. The book's script changes based on the version played.

Pokémon Sun and Ultra Sun
The empty sky broke asunder,
a hole appearing where had been none.
A single beast appeared from in it:
it was called the beast that devours the sun
The king of Alola bowed before it:
the beast that shone so like the sun.
The island guardians fought against it,
but in the end the beast had won.
Then did the beast that devours the sun
shine its light on the line of kings.
Then did the beast that had won
bring nature’s gift to bless all things.
Beast of sun and beast of moon.
Through their union, they brought new life.
A fragile heir in Alola born
that island guardians would keep from strife.
The ancient kings sang their thanks
for Solgaleo with song of flute.
Two tones rang out across the altar—
a perfect pair, ever after mute.
Pokémon Moon and Ultra Moon
The empty sky broke asunder,
a hole appearing where had been none.
A single beast appeared from in it:
it was named the beast that calls the moon
The king of Alola bowed before it:
the beast that stole all of heavens' light.
The island guardians fought against it,
but in the end they lost the fight.
Then did the beast that brings the dark
cast its pall on the line of kings.
So would the beast that had won
mark the path for all such finished things.
Beast of sun and beast of moon.
Through their union, they brought new life.
A fragile heir in Alola born
that island guardians would keep from strife.
The ancient kings sang their thanks
for Lunala with song of flute.
Two tones rang out across the altar—
a perfect pair, ever after mute.

The Guardians and the Ancient Kings

The Guardians and the Ancient Kings is a book in Malie Library, focusing on the history of the guardian deities.

In ancient times, the tapu served as the leaders
of the armies of each island's king, but if they
used their Z-Power in battle, it caused great
destruction across the islands.
Because of this, the tapu came to no longer
lend their aid in the wars of men.

The Tapu and the Island Kahunas

The Tapu and the Island Kahunas is a book in the Malie Library, focusing on the relationship between the two groups. The dialogue differs slightly between Sun and Moon and Ultra Sun and Moon, in which Sparkling Stone is capitalized in the latter.

The tapu choose the kahuna of their islands
and entrust them with special Sparkling Stones.
What reasoning they use to make such a choice,
however, is not at all apparent to observers.

The Guardian Deities of the Islands

The Guardian Deities of the Islands is another book focusing on the tapu found in Malie Library discussing the Pokémon's biology.

The tapu regularly keep themselves closed tight
in their shells as they absorb nature's energy.
After many long years of absorbing such energy,
their shells become hard and sturdy.

The Legendary Pokémon and the Tapu

The Legendary Pokémon and the Tapu is the final book found in the Malie Library in Sun and Moon, once again focusing on the Tapu. It describes their relationship with Alola's Legendary Pokémon of the Sun or Moon, Solgaleo and Lunala.

A great and terrible battle waged between the
tapu and the Legendary Pokémon, but neither
side could claim victory over the other.
Upon finding themselves equals, the Legendary
Pokémon then gifted the tapu with great power
of unknown providence.
