Electivire and Magmortar, two counterparts battling each other

Counterparts are Pokémon that are treated as opposites or complementary of each other, usually they are version exclusives, or they are more common in one version and less common in the other one.

Overview

According to Pocket Monsters Encyclopedia, Pokémon like Scyther and Electabuzz can distinguish colors. They have a natural affinity for the color red in particular, which is why they appear only in the Pokémon Red, while Pinsir is said to prefer the color green, which is the color of the game Pokémon Green where Pinsir appear instead.

The Pokémon Black and White Pokédex describes how red and blue Basculin are hostile to each other which seems to be the reason why only one of them appear in the wild depending on the game version.
