This page is for displaying challenges I've overcome in the Pokemon series. More specifically SPRuns(Single Pokemon Runs). Objective of these are simple. Use only one Pokemon to finish the game. The only other Pokemon allowed are HM slaves which will learn and use any HMs you need to use. Right before fighting the Elite Four or any NPC that will trigger the ending of the game shortly after you put the HM slaves away and use only that Pokemon for the whole time.

Some of the SPRuns were harder than the others to accomplish and finish. Overall I would sometimes get frustrated and give up for a bit before getting back onto the horse to complete the run. Any Pokemon can be used for this run but Legendaries. Why? Simply because it gets boring after five minutes of watching someone just use a legend use powerhouse moves every 2 seconds. Pokemon in this run ARE THE ONLY Pokemon used in the run. Need to do a gym? Put the others away except your one pokemon used in the run. If you're in a cave or dungeon and can't put them away then you set the battle to Set(Set sets the game to where it won't ask you to switch).

+Moves+

Moves I don't use during the runs:

  • Flash
  • I never use this move since it's worthless and means one less Pokemon move that can be useful and put on the HM slaves. However in Generation II since the walls aren't very visible, it might be advised to use it in several caves.
  • Moves with only 5 PP
  • Reason being is the second strongest attack usually has about 15-20 PP usage and lasts a lot longer and has a better chance of doing direct damage.
  • Cut
  • Exception for the generation I games since you need it to enter the Vermillion Gym. Afterward you don't need anywhere else really unless you want to make a short cut for Rock Tunnel which I tend to do anyways.
  • Whirlpool(gen II HM)
  • You only need it to get the 8th badge in generation II, afterward, useless.

+Pokemon+

Since these runs are really attempts at pushing Pokemon to their limits, it should be noted there are good Pokemon and bad Pokemon to use in runs. ALWAYS! In particular for example would be bug Pokemon starters. If you're using a Pokemon that evolves then using it's family is acceptable since it makes the only Pokemon you use more stronger in the run. A very bad example is using only a Metapod or Weedle. Metapod can only use Harden which is one of the smallest moveset pools ever. Harden won't help at all. Same for Tackle and String shot since the battle will take forever.

Starter Pokemon are acceptable to be used but I try to not use them since they are the most commonly used. Using abnormal and almost entirely ignored Pokemon is always fun since it proves they aren't as useless as they look either.

+Exceptional use of more than one Pokemon+

The only time you can use more than one is when the Pokemon has more than one final form to it. Nidoran sets are an example that allows you to use two pokemon.

All Pokemon that fit this exception:
Eevee(total of 8 final forms. Might want to make room for a flying type though)
Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀
Poliwag(final forms are Poliwrath and Politoed)
Oddish(final forms are VilepPlume and Bellosum)
Tyrogue(Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Hitmontop)
Ralts(Final forms are Gallede and Gardevoir)
Combee(final forms are Mothim and Vespiqueen)
Those are the only acceptionals.

+Acceptable types to use+

  • Normal type Pokemon

Why Normal types?

  • Not only do they have a small amount of moves super effective against them, but they can also learn a wide set of moves in some cases. A good example could be Skitty =>Delkatty for instance. Skitty could be taught Double Edge, Faint Attack, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, and then evolved to Delkatty which powers up the moves a bit and still holds a handle to beating any trainer since it knows four different moves that cover any type of adversary. Another good example could be Whismur => Loudred => Exploud.
  • Dual Types

Why Dual Types?

  • In some cases these Pokemon can be far more useful since they gain tend to gain double resistance in most cases. A very, very small pool of Pokemon are even in lacking of weakness unless a move like Foresight is used on it to expose its two types and give them a weakness. However its alright to mix in non-dual types as well.

+Glitches Used+

+Gen I+

Can't really cheat for a starter here so you have to play until you find what you want which usually takes awhile. As of now I haven't done any Gen I SPRuns.

+Gen II+

  • PC glitch

Wait, what?

  • This is done in a much different way than what most people do. Save the game in front of Elm's lab at the start of the game. Play through the start as normal until you get Poke Balls. After this play through like normal but DO NOT SAVE! Why? You need to find the Pokemon you want. If you have to beat the first Gym Leader before finding that Pokemon then fine. Try to make sure the pokemon you are using in the run isn't over Lv10+ or it deducts away from the challenge.

+Gen III+

None as far as I know except that Emerald cloning glitch I think.

+Gen IV+

Don't own a DS so none for here so far.

+Impossible to do runs+

These runs aren't possible since you run into something that prevents you from doing the run.

+Gen I+

None known so far.

+Gen II+

Ghastly => Haunter => Gengar only run

  • Why?
  • Early in the game many pokemon you face are NORMAL type, not so great when Ghastly doesn't learn a non-ghost type move until deeply later.

+Gen III+

Ralts => Kirlia => Gardevoir only run

  • Why?
  • Early in the game you run into a grunt using a Poochyena which is a dark type. Simply being able to do anything to it would require being Lv60+ as you would need to know Dream Eater and Hypnosis to do anything to it.

+Gen IV+

Don't own a DS so don't know.

+HM Slaves+

I tend to try to use a minimum of 2 Pokemon for HM slaves. I teach one of them Fly, Cut, and possibly Flash. The other is just as important needing to know Surf, Strength, Whirlpool, and Waterfall. When these 2 Pokemon are put into the Team then have the battle set to Mono, you're pretty much good to go since you got everything you need covered.
