This Pokémon spent an unknown number of chapters as Inkay.

Xerosic's Malamar (Japanese: クセロシキのカラマネロ Xerosicy's Calamanero) is Xerosic's main battling Pokémon in the manga, anime, and games.

In the manga

As an Inkay

Contrary activated

Prior to the start of the series Xerosic owned Malamar as an Inkay. He was showing signs that he wanted to evolve, but Xerosic couldn't figure out how to make it happen, trying everything at his disposal. Lysandre notices this and grabed Inkay and turned him upside down. Inkay immediately evolves into Malamar, much to their shock. Lysandre explains to them that when all your options are gone you may have to turn your thinking upside down. This message left a strong impression on both of them.

Malamar first appeared in X-actly What They Wanted with his Trainer watching Xerneas and Yveltal's rampage from the outskirts of Vaniville Town. It reappeared in Gathering Klefki, attacking Clemont in order to get him to stop resisting Xerosic.

In Malamar Traps, Malamar used his Hypnosis to put X's group to sleep so they could offer no resistance. Although he got most of them it is revealed that X and Croaky were unaffected due to X having water in his ears and Croaky using his tongue to block sound. Malamar and Croaky begin to battle and Malamar is quickly stunned after Croaky grabs Malamar with his tongue and slams him into the ground. Malamar lays low for a few moments and takes the opportunity to attack X, who dodges and slams Xerosic into the ground. Croaky attacks with Bubble to lower his speed, causing Malamar's Ability, Contrary to activate. Using the new boost in speed Malamar uses Hypnosis, but Croaky proves to still be faster. Hoping to wake up the others X has Croaky use Double Team to spread out. Furious that everyone might wake up Xerosic has Malamar use Topsy-Turvy to reverse Croaky's maneuverability, allowing Malamar to finally hit him with Hypnosis.

Having no options left X begs Salamè to come out of his ball and fight. Not giving X the chance Malamar slams X into the ground, with Xerosic saying to destroy the Poké Ball. Despite his best attempt Salamè continues to roll out of the way, until he gets trapped by a tree root. Malamar takes a final swing but is blocked by Marisso, protecting his friend. Malamar continues his barrage of attacks when suddenly Marisso evolves into a Chesnaught. This temporary stops Malamar, but Xerosic decides its not a concern and has Malamar continue attacking. The ball finally rolls out, only for it to be revealed that Salamè has already come out, revealing he has a Mega Stone. Blue wakes up and has his Charizard reveal the same thing, and the two Fire-types begin fighting Malamar and Xerosic's four Crobat. During the fight Salamè evolves into a Charizard and the two flame Pokémon Mega Evolve, defeating Xerosic's Pokémon.

Malamar in the anime

Malamar first appeared in The Right Hero for the Right Job!, where it battled alongside Xerosic's Crobat against some of Clemont's Pokémon, but eventually lost. Immediately after Xerosic was kicked out of the Lumiose Gym, allowing Clemont to reclaim it.

Malamar reappeared in Facing the Needs of the Many!, using Psychic to grab one of the Zygarde Cell Xerosic has found. He reveals to Ash and his friends that he plans on making Neo Team Flare and needs Zygarde to do so. Ash has Greninja use Water Shuriken to smash the device but Malamar stops it with Signal Beam and uses the opportunity to grab Clemont. Malamar is later seen collecting more Zygarde Cells when Ash's Greninja appears. Malamar attacks with Signal Beam again and Greninja dodges and hits it wwith Water Shuriken. Xerosic has Malamar use Psycho Cut and the two flee, but unknown to them Greninja sneaked onto the truck. Ash and his group eventually find Xerosic and corner him. Xerosic orders Crobat to use Air Slash but Clemont brings out Chespin to counter with Pin Missile. The attacks collide as Ash has Greninja team up with Chespin. Xerosic orders a Signal Beam and Wing Attack but with Vine Whip, Chespin is able to dodge and hits Crobat with Tackle. Xerosic becomes angry about this and orders Air Slash but Greninja strikes back with Water Shuriken to stop the attack and knock out Crobat. Xerosic recalls Crobat and goes to jump out and recalls Malamar, but Clemont uses his Aipom arm to grab Xerosic, allowing them to capture him.
