/vp/ (formerly also known as /tr/) is the Pokémon Imageboard on the infamous site 4chan.org. It is unmoderated and mostly uncensored, with most of the rule "enforcement" carried out by the users themselves. While 4chan itself has global moderators, /vp/ is not considered to be significant enough to need board-specific ones. Users usually refer to themselves as /tr/ainers or /vp/oreons, or sometimes other puns related to the board's name.

History

With the release of HGSS and as Generation V approached, the number of Pokémon related threads on 4chan's general video game board increased dramatically. In response to several user complaints and in anticipation of more threads to come with the release of the games themselves, the new board was created to house all discussions related to the Pokémon franchise.

Common topics of discussion

Discussions are kept in specific threads, where any user can anonymously answer to any post, upload a picture, and quote some previous posts. Due to the imageboard's principle of keeping content on the first page fresh and up-to-date, every thread is automatically deleted after either a large amount of messages/pictures are in it (referred to as the "bump limit") or if nobody posts in it for a while; most popular threads get recreated after they reach this limit. Various other monster related series, such as Digimon, are also brought up on /vp/ on occasion in retaliation of Pokémon getting its own board. Serebii is occasionally the butt of various discussions regarding its history of fatal mistakes and gullibility. [1]

Pokemon General

These threads originated on /v/ (4chan's general video game board) and have continued into /vp/ even though their original purpose is no longer needed. Nowadays these threads mostly contain discussion about the metagame. They are also sometimes used as an "off-topic" section of /vp/.

Trading

In these threads, users trade with each other using Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Most users post their tradelists containing images of Pokémon, typically of what they want to receive and what they can distribute. Unlike in other threads, names are more often used here, mostly to tell other traders user's Friend Code and OT, or name.

Battling

Like in Trade threads, users often fill namefield with their's Friend Codes here to make it easier to find opponents to battle. Several specific battling rules was created in this theads:

  • Roulette Battling - battler gets it's Pokémon counted and tells the total number to opponent for it to pick 6 numbers less than said one. Pokémon, assigned to this numbers are used in battle in the exact order.
  • Monotype - Each opponent uses Pokémon of single type.
  • Monocolor - For each opponent only Pokémon of single color are allowed to participate. Colors are determined by either Pokedex colors, or based on Pokémon appearence.
  • Karen Battle - Following Karen's words: "Truly skilled trainers should try to win with their favorites." opponent use only their favourite Pokémon (or bros) regardless of their tier. However hax and overpowered or Legendary Pokémon are usually forbidden.

Art dumps

Threads where users post large numbers of images without much discussion. These can focus on one Pokémon, certain characters, a certain style such as Pearlsaurus, or cutesy images, and so on.

Nuzlocke

Several common threads, dedicated to the Nuzlocke Challenge are common to /vp/:

  • Posting stories about their playthrough
  • Online Streaming
  • Asking other users to decide things such as the player's name, the Rival's name or a Pokémon's.

Draw threads

Draw threads are where users request pictures to be drawn and artists in the thread fulfill these requests. Usually the requests are simple, such as "draw pokémon X doing Y" and so on. Several archives exist of collected work produced in draw threads.

Shipping

Shippings are a common discussion on /vp/, often causing dispute between members as they post images of their favorite couples.

Speculations about upcoming events

When a new game is in the midst, it's not uncommon for users to guess at the new Pokémon names or design new Pokémon based on silhouettes such as when Zoroark's silhouette was released.

Fake GTS distributions

Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Several fake GTS servers are run by board users, typically distributing various Event Pokémon, Shiny Pokémon, or other oddities.

Pornography

Due to the lack of any real moderation, pornographic content is a very common topic of discussion. Usually these threads are dedicated to a character (or several) of the franchise, or a particular Pokémon. These threads usually involve Pokémon such as Gardevoir or Eeveelutions but often include others. These kinds of threads are usually "countered" by flooding them with various images with Gary Oak's face photo shopped on them.

Notable memes

  • Tentaquil - A blue amphibian-like Fakemon that is well known by /vp/ users. [2]
  • Gary Oak's face.
  • Smugleaf - Responsible for name popularization.
  • Sad Fish - A Fakemon with similar features as Basslao, often used for reaction images. [3]
  • Serebii confirmed! [4]

Role during Wottergate

/vp/ played the role of a neutral battleground between the large Pokémon websites during Wottergate, stemming largely from the lack of moderation. /vp/ was also responsible for many of the photo shopped "evidence" images [5] used in a smear campaign against Serebii.net. [6] (These images later ended up being largely false.)
