The Wedlocke Challenge is a variant of the Nuzlocke Challenge, invented by Marriland. The name, also invented by Marriland, comes from 'wedlock', another word for marriage, referring to the fact that opposite-gender Pokémon form pairs. Like the Nuzlocke challenge, the rules are not enforced by the game and are therefore subject to variation.

Rules

  • Any Pokémon that faints is considered dead and must be released.
  • The player may only catch the first Pokémon encountered in each area, and none else. If the first Pokémon encountered faints or flees, there are no second chances. (If the first encounter in the area is a double battle in dark grass, the player can choose which of the two Pokémon they would like to catch.)
  • The player may have three male Pokémon and three female Pokémon in their party at any time. Each male Pokémon forms a pair with a female Pokémon, and the two may only switch with each other in battle.
  • Genderless Pokémon can not be caught. If they must be caught for any reason, they must not be used.

Optional rules

  • Gender clause: if there is at least one unpaired Pokémon, this can be invoked so those with the same gender as the unpaired Pokémon will not count.
  • Any other optional rules for a standard Nuzlocke challenge can also be applied.

Same-gender pairings

Players, if they choose, can play a Wedlocke with same-gender pairs. Options include:

  • Using only one gender exclusively.
  • Mixing genders, yet keeping them in same-gender pairs.
  • Mix both same-gender and opposite-gender pairings. A factor can be applied to determine pairings.
