Environment (Japanese: 場所 location) is a mechanic introduced in Generation III games. It affects the moves Camouflage, Nature Power, and Secret Power, as well as the cloak that Burmy changes to. It is an approximation of the location where the current Pokémon battle takes place, such as tall grass or the water's edge.
Terminology
There have been multiple names for this mechanic across the games.
Japanese
「場所」 (location) is used in all main series games' descriptions of the moves.
「ちけい」 (terrain) is used in Mystery Dungeon games' descriptions of the moves, prior to Gates to Infinity.
「ふうけい」 (scenery) is used in Mystery Dungeon games' descriptions of the moves, Gates to Infinity onwards.
English
In Generation III, the term has been translated as "location" in Hoenn- and Orre-based games, as well as the description of Nature Power in FireRed and LeafGreen. In the description of Camouflage and Secret Power, it is instead called "terrain".
Generation IV onwards, the term has been translated as "environment".
In Mystery Dungeon, it is called "terrain" prior to Gates to Infinity, and "scenery" Gates to Infinity onwards.
In core series
In Generation III through V, the environment is based on the tile the player initiated battle on rather than the location. In Generation IV, however, the plain platform gets replaced by grass platform and mountain platform in places with grassy and mountainous background, respectively.
In Generation VI, in a Double and Triple Battles, each Pokémon has its own platform. Additionally, the size of the platform depends on the Pokémon.
A Rotation Battle visually changes the environment's platform. In Generation V, it completely replaces it, while in Generation VI it's more of an overlay on the environment.
