Trivia

Tentacruel appear strikingly similar to the Martians from War of The Worlds. Should this be reflected in the trivia section, or is it a coincidence?- unsigned comment from Zankou (talkcontribs)

- i would go for coincidence...

What do people think of tentacruel being one of only 3 pokemon in 1st generation to learn barrier? - perhaps squad-worthy material in this light methinks :)?- unsigned comment from Clay1st (talkcontribs)

Platinum

Tentacool is catchable in Platinum. I don't know how the tables on this wiki work, so I'm going to leave it, but Tentacruel is obtainable through evolution. King Neoterikos 05:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Route 42 in HGSS

This article says that Tentacruel is catchable on Route 42 in HGSS but the Route 42 article makes no mention of either Tentacruel or Tentacool. So can they be caught there or not? --Kitsunegami 07:10, 22 August 2010 (UTC)

Pic

Why are we using this horrible blocky RG image as the main image, and not the crisp clear match-all-the-other-g1-pokemon Firered/Leafgreen pic that we have?Bug Catcher Wade 18:38, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Because it is Red and Blue's birthday. Blake Talk·Edits 18:50, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

Gen V sprite

I just noticed this, Tentacruel's fifth gen sprite has tenacales that are of a purplish hue. Should this be in the trivia section? AshKetchumNo.1 13:26, 10 August 2011 (UTC)

yea, the Gen V sprites show it with blackish tenticles, unlike the gen III and IV sprites. Plokool 01:35, 28 November 2011 (UTC)

HM07 Waterfall

Can I get some clarification on whether Tentacruel can actually learn HM07 Waterfall in Gen II, because the one I have can't for some reason. I have video proof, where I select Tentacruel in my party (nicknamed "Octiva"), then attempt to teach it HM07 Waterfall: http://bit.ly/1kIPqbh (MP4 video recording of Pokémon Silver located on my Google Drive) - It is Lv.20 (caught it as is without training it), so perhaps it has to be a certain level before it can be taught? Neohylanmay (talk) 15:53, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

It can't, as can already be seen on its Gen 2 learnset page. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 16:10, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Understood; should it be removed from the Waterfall page then? --Neohylanmay (talk) 16:32, 18 April 2014 (UTC)
Done. Thanks for pointing that out. (As a side note, please use link templates, such as {{m|Waterfall}} for moves rather than just [[Waterfall]]. This adds the correct parenthetical suffix to the link.) Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 16:38, 18 April 2014 (UTC)

Biology

Tentacruel should not be classed as a cnidaria Pokémon, and instead should be a cephalopod Pokémon. It's certain they would not be classed alongside jellyfish as cnidaria - their anatomy is too complex, they have eyes, they are sentient - none of those characteristics suggest inclusion in the cnidaria family as appropriate.

If you look at Tentacruel's egg group, Water 3, it becomes more clear that Tentacruel is a cephalopod, considering this class is under the phylum Mollusca which bubbles up to arthropods, and nearly all members of Tentacruel's egg group would belong to this branch of the animal kingdom - cephalopods, crustaceans, mollusks, and the like. Omanyte, Clauncher, Wimpod, Anorith, Lileep, Binacle, Krabby, Crabrawler, Kabuto, Corsola, Skorupi, and Shellder evolutionary families? All Arachnida, cephalopods, crustaceans, or mollusks - all arthropods.

There is evidence that Tentacruel should be classed alongside jellyfish, but that evidence is flimsy and really only indicates the creators inspiration, not the outcome. Yes, Tentacruel was originally known as Manowar in the Red/Blue beta - from Portuguese Man'o'war, a member of the cnidaria phylum. Similarly its name in Japanese is Dokukurage, which is clearly a combination of doku (poison) and kurage (jellyfish). But a name alone does not provide sufficient backup to firmly consider Tentacruel a jellyfish. One may look to Pokémon Category to insist that Tentacruel is more cnidaria than cephalopod and while an official source I would defer to in nearly all instances - in this case it's a misnomer. Tentacruel is not a jellyfish.

After all, is a Bearcat related to bears or cats? Is an Electric Eel an eel? Is a Red Panda related to a Panda? Is the King Cobra a cobra at all? Is a Mantis Shrimp a mantis or a shrimp? Is a Horny Toad a toad? Is a Koala Bear a bear? No, across the board. In fact.. a jellyfish isn't even a fish.

It's a Pokémon based on jellyfishes with typical artistic liberties like adding eyes to give character more personality. Pokémon don't have known biological classification, we can only refer to animals they're based on. You don't know if they would have their own, completely different from ours classification with different terminology and different process of evolution.--Rocket Grunt 14:33, 22 September 2022 (UTC)
