Concept Art

Does anyone know where I can find the character concept art of his for movies 1-3? I have from 4 on, but...--BJG

TCG illustrations

The article mentions that Ken Sugimori has illustrated for the TCG, and while this is partially true, it's been worded in a way that sounds like he draws new art for the TCG, and that really isn't the case at all. In nearly every card I've seen where he was credited, the artwork merely reuses stock artwork that he had drawn for the games. There is almost never any new artwork that he had drawn solely for the TCG. The only one that I can think of is "Professor Elm's Training Method", but for all we know, maybe that could have also originally been game artwork.

If he did drew artwork solely for the TCG, then okay, but the majority of the cards he's credited in merely reuses his artwork as stock. They should be mentioned somewhere. Rai Marshall 00:29, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Example 1, example 2. I can find more if you'd like. MaverickNate 00:39, 7 April 2012 (UTC)
Okay, we have those. But what about the 90% of other cards that merely reuses his artwork as stock? That should still be mentioned somewhere. Rai Marshall 00:40, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Official Artwork

Whilst not strictly about Ken Sugimori, or his art, may I query as to why, on the pages of each Pokémon, where it used to say something along the lines of "Official artwork from FireRed and LeafGreen by Ken Sugimori" for example, it now says "Images on the Bulbagarden Archives"? Surely it was more explanatory beforehand. Isn't this technically just removing information from a website intended to include as much necessary information as possible? Does this mean it was unnecessary, because, although it was pretty obvious to me which game/games the artwork was from, it wouldn't be to people first seeing the artwork. I know this is kind of nitpicking, but it just bugs me. Couldn't both the "Images on...", and "Artwork from..." links be used on each page simultaneously? Thanks for reading.--ShinyPatch (talk) 16:25, 7 June 2014 (UTC)

Ken and Venusaur citation

I tried looking for a source by using Google translate. All the Japanese pages referenced the X/Y Strategy Book but I couldn't find a scan for conversation.

Even the Japanese Ken's Wikipedia page referenced the book.

Noting: "My favorite Pokemon is Genger . The reason is "Because there are few lines and it is easy to draw." For the same reason I dislike Pokemon Fushigibana . However, in the "XY" strategy book, "(favorite Pokemon is Fushigibana, monster fused with plant and animal was fresh)""

Translated Sugimori's wiki page: https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=ja&u=https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%25E6%259D%2589%25E6%25A3%25AE%25E5%25BB%25BA&prev=search

In the references sections it says: Pocket Monsters X · Y Official Guide Book Complete Carous (Kalos) Region Completed Guide.

No citation from the book can be obtained at the moment except citing the name of the book. - unsigned comment from ZeraX (talkcontribs)

I understand what you're saying, but please try to understand that (a) Google Translate is not reliable; we need an actual fluent Japanese speaker to confirm any Japanese-language sources we wish to use; and (b) wikis are not reliable because anyone can edit them. For all we know, perhaps one person somewhere made up this info on a Japanese wiki page, falsely cited it to the guidebook, and lots of other Japanese wiki pages may have copied that false info and citation without consulting the guidebook for themselves. Thanks for your understanding. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 17:24, 10 February 2017 (UTC)
I've looked around, and I'm pretty sure his favorite really is Gengar, as there were several (independent) articles that, quoting several different Japanese magazine articles or Sugimori interviews (none of which seem to be accessible online). In one of the instances, I could actually track down their claims to a Bulbagarden forums thread (which apparently went lost, but is mentioned/quoted here and here), which purportedly contains a translation of one magazine article (if someone can access it and/or somehow remove the "citation needed" here somehow, that'd be cool). There's also this interesting video, but as far as I can tell (!), Sugimori doesn't really say Gengar's his favorite.
For Venusaur being his least favorite, all English language sources seem to stem from this article that links here. Interestingly, only the English-language report talks about Venusaur, but it's more or less exactly that "many lines, hard to draw" thing that sits unsourced at the Japanese Wikipedia and Niconico pedia (see Talk:Venusaur (Pokémon)#Ken Sugimori and Venusaur). Without access to the original source, it might have been a mistranslation that spread (even back to Japan), or maybe he really said he dislikes it (or doesn't like to draw it, or something). Ken Sugimori Pokémon Cards

Do we know who does the paintings that are used for cards that have Sugimori as the credited artist? Jdrawer (talk) 04:44, 27 July 2019 (UTC)

Is there a page listing Pokémon created and/or designed by Sugimori?

I thought it would have been here, like with James Turner. If its separate, it should at least be linked within the main page. Pallukun (talk) 20:41, 25 October 2020 (UTC)

There is a user page for it.--ForceFire 05:04, 26 October 2020 (UTC)
