Badge Names/Spacing

For the record, is it "Boulderbadge" or "Boulder Badge"? Also, I figure listing what Badges do both here and in the Gym Leader page is redundant. I think it is more appropriate here. uhhh... And, how do you make it so that pages can link to individual badges within this page? Like Badge#Boulder Badge Is that possible? --greengiant

Is it REALLY necessary to imply that the Japanese word for "badge" is different from the English word? --Ketsuban

To Ket, I think someone may have gone a bit overboard on our translation thing. ^^; And with respect to the #___Badge, yeah, I'll edit that so it's possible. And I believe the name is Boulderbadge, with no space, although this in turn is probably due to the game's character limit. evkl 00:33, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Use the ==== as the header title for all badges. And maybe debold the names of the badges? I'm not sure... And yeah, that header will allow Badges#Cascade Badge and the like. evkl 01:08, 7 Apr 2005 (UTC)

May I ask why you replaced all the japanese text with question marks? or am I just viewing the page wrong? --greengiant

It seems that multiple recent edits by people are leaving the Japanese text in pages converted to ???... --Meowth346

>Ineteresting. Is everyone doing it, or just certain users? If it's everyone, the last update may have accidentally turned of RichText . . . Or at least that's what happened before on a messageboard where this same problem occured.

Hoenn/Shin'ō Badges

Does anyone know where the Kanto and Johto badges' images came from, or who made them? I think it would look a lot better if we had something like that for the other two regions... I mean, if anyone has some drawing skill and can draw out the Hoenn badges, then digitally color them like the other ones, that'd be a good substitute for that anime screenshot... Same for the Shin'ō ones, if we get their colors ahead of time... Depends on how fast we get through Shin'ō in the anime, though, I'd suppose. Tom Temprotran 02:44, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

From the adapted Chapter Books: Read the excerpt, flip a page and notice Coral-Eye Badge. How canonical is that? I don't know, but really it's our only evidence. It's how we figured out it's Cissy instead of Sissy, I think. --Greengiant 18:49, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Gymbaliar

Should we mention somewhere in the anime section that Jessie ran a gym for one D&P episode, and gave out at least one badge to a trainer? Whether or not its considered offical is questionable, and it was not seen, but it should be mentioned that they DID have badges.Spongemaster0 14:16, 23 July 2007 (UTC)

The badge in question, I believe, was 3 of James's bottle caps glued together. I'm Missingno. Master, and I approve this message. 22:52, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Multiple Gyms

I've been watching Pokémon Chronicles lately, and something in the episode where Misty takes over as Gym Leader (Cerulean Blues, I think) seems kinda relevant. The Inspectors that are busy closing down various Gyms across Kanto are reported on the news to have closed down several already. If eight badges are a requirement for entering the Indigo League, there must be at least eight still open after those closures, right? That would seem to imply that there were (prior to that episode) several extra Gyms.

Also, in the games the "Fighting Dojo" is supposed to have had Gym status, and recently lost it. Bearing in mind that Sabrina's Gym has a pretty formidable reputation, I doubt its "brand new", in which case I'd espect the Fighting Dojo and Sabrina's Gym to have run simultaneously, at least for a bit. I know the Dojo was never mentioned in the Anime, but maybe one of Gary's badges (or the other trainers') could be from there, or other similar Gyms that were closed down?

--Aiden Iakona 12:37, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

The anime seems to work pretty clearly under the assumption that there are more than eight gyms in a region. --Pie ~ 17:53, 31 July 2007 (UTC)
Well, in most major regions anyway. Orange Islands was an exception. That made the opposite clear, that there were only four gyms in the islands. --Pie ~ 17:54, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Badge name spacing

I see someone reccently changed the badge names to give them consistant spacing. But a pretty quick video search on YouTube shows me that Boulderbadge and so on was correct, and is still kept in FR/LG.--Porygon 09:38, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

Yes, but it's HEAT BADGE and so on in Emerald, so I think that it was always their intention to have spaces, they just didn't have room in RBYGSC and wanted to keep with tradition in RSFRLG. Emerald they spaced and DP they finally turned off caps lock. TTEchidna 10:05, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
Actually, RS did use spaces. And FR/LG came out afterward without the spacing. Maybe it was a character limit thing, I'll look through some official uses of the terms when I can and see if they agree with you. I just thought that was worth noting.--Porygon 11:00, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
All I can really say is that we'll know for sure for Johto/Kanto badges with GSDS. Seeing as FRLG was a remake of RB anyway, though... I think they were just keeping with tradition. TTEchidna 09:11, 6 August 2007 (UTC)
Weighing in, I think other forms of canon have always put a space between the words, which gives some weight to standardizing them as always spaced. I mean, granted, we usually set game canon as the one true canon, but... also, btw, RSE and FRLG weren't necessarily translated by the same people in the company, which could account for the difference. I wouldn't be surprised if the people translating FRLG were looking back at the generation I data for reference far more than the data for the other generation III games, except maybe to make sure the new items shared the same names. Badges aren't new, so why would they think to check? --Pie ~ 18:00, 6 August 2007 (UTC)

Computers versus badges

Does anyone else find it odd that badges/ribbons themselves serve as authentication rather than a computerized system (then again, if badges were simply for decoration and kept track of by computer, we couldn't have "badge theft" episodes)? It seems strange that there's a computerized system for transferring Pokémon over large distances but not a system for keeping track of trainer acheivements. Perhaps a note should be made of that.--Yoshi1001 22:24, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

At one point, just prior to his entry into the Hoenn League Ash goes through the obligatory 'Badge loss' episode and is told that he can still enter due to the records but states that he wouldn't want to without the badges, that losing them would be a major psychological blow. Now whether thats unique to the Hoenn region or not is another matter... Ricohard 03:35, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Should we add the badges in the case awarded for Ash in his fantasy in "Malice in Wonderland", or because they were in a fantasy we should ignore them? Gary and Otoshi's Badges

Since Kanto and Johto both have the same league, wouldn't that mean that these extra badges aren't necesarily only from Kanto, but can be from Johto as well. It was proven by Sakura, who was going to the Indigo League, that one does not need to get all eight from only one region, but they can get any ratio of eight throughout the two regions. So, couldn't these be from Johto as well, even though Johto didn't exist when they were seen? MoldyOrange 14:45, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Sakura didn't specify which competition she was entering. As far as we know from Ash's journey, the Kanto badges work at the Indigo Plateau and he needed to collect another eight from Johto before he could enter the Silver Conference. --FabuVinny |Talk Page| 15:19, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Gary's badges

In the section "Gary" of the article it states "This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types" Where does this figure of fifteen come from? There were sixteen Pokemon types in Generation I; Dark was the only type not to have any Pokemon named after it (easy to find a Pokemon of each type: Rattata, Machop, Pidgey, Koffing, Sandshrew, Geodude, Caterpie, Gastly, Magnemite, Charmander, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Pikachu, Alakazam, Jynx and Dratini for example). If the sentence is referring to only single-types then it would be much less than 15 as there certainly weren't any single-typed Dark, Ice or Steel Pokemon (and maybe more) in Generation I. So I think the sentence is inaccurate. Kidburla 23:05, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Gen1 had fifteen types. Gen2 had 17. IIMarckus 23:08, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
My bad. Steel is the other one. Magnemite changed type in Generation II, and so wasn't Steel-type in Generation I. Kidburla 23:11, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Marsh and Soul and Renaming, oh my!

So, Sabrina's badge was originally going to be the Soul Badge, because Psychickers can peer into your soul... and Koga's badge was going to be the Marsh Badge, because Poisonous fumes come from marshes and such. These were accidentally flipped in the final version, and have stuck even in Gen II and the Gen III remakes. Eevee is not Eon, and Abra is not Hocus. But we still mention that before the official release, Eevee was going to be called Eon and Abra Hocus and Kadabra Pocus and such. Why don't we mention this flip-flop then? Especially considering the fact that it was a mistake, rather than a purposeful decision? Satosuke 01:49, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

We have sources for unused Pokemon names. Do you have any source for the badge naming? Who says that one was supposed to be the other? IIMarckus 01:55, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Not offhand, but I could probably find some. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned in a discussion with NoA or PUSA at some point. Satosuke 02:54, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Please do. IIMarckus 03:06, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
I've always thought this myself. I also wonder if the shapes were switched too, since hearts have more to do with soul than circles, and I guess a double-rimmed circle could vaguely represent some area such as marsh.Captain Skank 16:44, 4 March 2009 (UTC)

Polishing...

I don't see that info anywhere... or maybe no one has noticed. You can actually polish your badges in DP (and I think also in Pt) and make them shine. Where should it be put? hfc2X 21:35, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

I'm surprised it's not in the article; it's a pretty fun new aspect to the badges. Oh wait, YES IT IS. Check under Sinnoh League. It's mentioned there. Satosuke 04:49, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Dive

In the trivia it says that Dive "cannot be used or obtained without trading in Kanto." This implies that it can be USED in Kanto, I wasn't aware of this, but if this is not the case, perhaps it could be better phrased as "cannot be obtained without trading or used in Kanto" Sorry if I'm wrong as this is an observation from memories of the game rather than from concrete knowledge. - Gastly's Mama

More than eight gyms...

Disorganization

Is it just me or does anyone else feel this page is horribly messy and practically illegible? Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 20:45, 15 March 2009 (UTC)

I think so too... Maybe we could make a table... Something like:
Name Image Location HM Allowed Obeying Level Stat Raised Leader
Boulder Badge   Pewter City Flash 10 Attack Brock
Flint
Lola
Forrest
Cascade Badge   Cerulean City Cut 30 None Misty
Daisy
Violet
Lily
Something like that, just... well, prettier... --Mr. Charlie 17:29, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

It's certainly more easy on the eyes. The only problem is that every badge does a combination of HM/Stat/Level, so the listing would have to be adjusted to fit. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 18:05, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

The idea is to make a single table to include every badge, or at least on table per region. That way al the information would be organized in he same place. I modified the one above to include the Cascade Badge and added a new column to the obeying level for traded Pokémon.
I would do it myself, but I suck at making tables...-- Mr. Charlie 20:21, 23 March 2009
I've tried to make a table, tell me what you think. I've put it in a spoiler because it's kinda big... It still needs links and stuff and I've only made for the Kanto League Badges, but the basic idea is there.

Problem is, with the exception of the ones in the Orange Archipelago, every single gym and badge that's been shown in the anime is one featured in the handheld video games. If such an idea were to be implemented, it would be for the video games, not for the anime. --Shiningpikablu252 19:00, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

Badges as mind-control

I seem to recall at least one instance in the Special manga where Pikachu or another Pokemon was at least subtly influenced by the badges. I believe the gym leaders also described them as having the power to control Pokemon, possibly around the Silph Co. battle arc... Does anyone know of a specific instance of this being stated? Redstar 03:04, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

The way I recall it (Though mind you it's been a while isnce I've read the RBG arc), the badges alone don't control Pokémon in Special. But when put in the Badge Energy Amplifier, that's when it is able to control Pokémon within a specific radius.
Yes, that makes more sense. I vaguely recall an instance of Pikachu being manipulated by Red or another person, but it may not have been badge-related or even in the manga. I did find several scans that confirm that badges do in fact manipulate Pokemon to a degree, but whether this is generally or only in conjunction with each other due the BEA is unclear. Suggestion;

"Highest level of obeying Pokémon: N/A" Instead of N/A, wouldn't it make more sense to use the same level as the previous one? It's not like the privilege of the obeying Pokemon is taken away.. It doesn't say it gives that level, it just says that it's the highest level of obeying Pokemon.. Consider it? >.> --♪ Jason Tong ♪ 21:59, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

For future reference, in case anyone brings this point up again, this suggestion doesn't work on one major principle: the obedience of the traded pokémon is directly controlled by the badged a player has. Meaning, if I skipped Sabrina (whose badge grants obedience to pokémon up to level 70) leaving me with only obedience at level 50 (Rainbow Badge), then if I went to fight Blaine (whose order is after Sabrina), my traded pokémon would still stop obeying me once it reached level 51 despite having a superior badge from a trainer stronger than Sabrina. Without the Marsh badge, they will still disobey. These are the abilities granted by a gym badge itself, not simply something that happens with a certain amount of gyms defeated. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 20:01, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Two badges not mentioned

There are two known badges not mentioned, though they aren't gym badges they still connect to the Pokemon League in the anime. One badge is the Exam badge that works like all 8 would normally. It was shown in an episode and looks like a red boulder badge with a giant P in the middle. The second badge missing is the one giving to Ash when the Pokemon League ended after his loss to Richie.--Lycos Ex Mortis 05:06, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Gary and other ideas

Part of the article I have ideas about improving: Gary Oak acquired more than the standard eight Kanto League badges, thus leading to confusion as to whether or not there is an infinite number of badges that can be given out in a given region. By The Battle of the Badge, he is shown to have at least ten badges, only 3 of which correspond to known Kanto league badges, suggesting there are at least fifteen gyms in Kanto. This would, therefore, provide one gym for each of the (at the time) fifteen types. Among these may include the Fighting Dojo, a gym shown to be defunct by Pokémon Red and Blue.

When I first saw the anime episode which is described in this section of the article ( I saw the episode long before I ever read this article) I immediatly thought that Gary recived the badges from other regions (possibly regions that are still unknown as of today) and that the Pokemon League (at least in Kanto) did not care which badges you have as long as you have 8. Also on the subject of more than 8 gym badges in Kanto, there were examples of cites in anime (in Kanto) which were not in the games (such as the city in which Ash got his Muk, if I not mistaken)leading a viewer to believe that there could be many more cities (and gym badges) in the region. I would be glad to hear input from others on these ideas (and people to confirm I am making correct episode references)and if anybody thinks any of these ideas deserve to go in the article.Tough_guy22 19:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

You mean everything except the first few paragraphs in the In the anime section? Werdnae (talk) 00:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Please clairify, im not quite sure what your question is. Tough_guy22 19:25, 26 May 2010 (UTC)
Nevermind, I misread your post. It has been implied in the anime that the badges only work in one region (as Ash must collect 8 new badges in each region, although this didn't happen until a bit after that episode), and so others must have come from gyms and cities not in the games. Maybe it should be summarised in a paragraph in the section before it turns into a big list with no introduction? Werdnae (talk) 01:13, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
I think the reason I thought that Gary's badges were from a different region was largly because of the fact that the episode took place in Viridan city, which as we know is connected to the walking route that goes to and from Johto. Would you agree with me that the fact that there are "anime only" cities should be mentioned in the article as a possible reason for there being more that 8 Kanto badges?? (Tough guy22 02:34, 27 May 2010 (UTC))
Yes, it probably should. What should also be mentioned it that there are badges in the anime that aren't in the games (and I mean it should be mentioned outside the character subsections), and that there is thought to be a gym for each type in every region, due to the number of different badges. At the moment it just talks about the badges and then launches into sections for each character. I feel that it looks a little out of place, and the character sections need an introduction of sorts to explain them. That introduction would be the perfect place for this stuff. Werdnae (talk) 02:48, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
The character Gary is protrayed to be likely would have fought the harder gyms if there were in fact 15 gyms in Kanto. Whereas Ash simiply fought the gyms in the cities he went to. It is possible that with Gary being related to Professor Oak he knew more about where stuff is and more cities (as Professor Oak supposedly traveled all over when he was young). Are you good enough that you could change the article, or do you know somebody who is kinda "in charge" of this article??? (Tough guy22 02:56, 27 May 2010 (UTC))
As far as I know there isn't anyone "in charge" of this article. I've got something I need to do just now, so it'll be a bit more than an hour until I can get to it. You can try editing it if you like. I'm sure once an edit is made to the article everyone watching the recent changes will come along and help. Or you could post it here and get opinions. Werdnae (talk) 04:30, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
Okay, i've rearranged the section and extended a paragraph to include some of that stuff. I haven't included that Gary may have deliberately chosen harder gyms, or known where the harder gyms were from Professor Oak, as that falls under the speculation category and speculation is (generally) not allowed. I've put in what I think works without becoming speculation and left the rest out. Modify it if you don't like it. Werdnae (talk) 06:07, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

Ah you're probably right. I must have wondered why he won't let me pass when I realized I had yet to battle Jasmine and Chuck. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 17:58, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
...Anyway, does this mean that, if you don't want the TM Jasmine gives, beating her is just a waste of time? Frenchhorn 19:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Nope, because you need to beat her for Team Rocket to attack the Radio Tower, and you can't get to Blackthorn without defeating Team Rocket there. Anyway, even if you could, you can't get into the Pokémon League without all eight badges. --SnorlaxMonster 14:47, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that. Herp derp. Frenchhorn 23:03, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Badges affect how much money is lost in battle

When losing a battle in the games, the amount of money the player loses depends somehow on the number of badges the player has. Shouldn't this be mentioned in the article? ~ Serial Colour 22:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

According to this it has nothing to do with badges. You may just be noticing the effects of level increasing as the game is progressed. Werdnae (talk) 03:52, 11 January 2012 (UTC)
Actually, you must have only skimmed that page, but it does mention that badges have an effect there. They determine your base payout. --SnorlaxMonster 06:04, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Basic Badge

Someone put Cheren under "Others in the games". --PenblooeR 00:28, 13 May 2012 (UTC)

I tried to and it was quickly removed. Rather silly if you ask me, we know for a fact that he gives out the Basic Badge. Kookamooka 17:25, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

I agree. Considering that B2W2 is coming out in 11 days in Japan, can't we put him in the others to give out the badge?--Pokemon26 (talk) 17:37, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Not yet because we are probably going to have to have another template for the gym leaders in BW2 and Cheren will go in there. --HoennMaster 18:11, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

Mine Badge Shovel Shape

I think it should be added that the three rocks also make up the head of a spade (shovel) which is what Byron carries. Yamitora1 11:47, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I don't see the resemblance. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 11:51, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Maybe seeing it side by side?

Yamitora1 12:00, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Nope, still don't see it. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 12:27, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
I do see what you mean. However, whereas the corners of Byron's shovel ends in a upward point, the 'shovel's spade' on the badge curls downwards, and the points are rounded. It was a good point to make, though, and I never would have seen it unless you pointed it out. ^-^ Littlmiget123 12:44, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
@ (politically correct term) Littleperson123: All shovels and Spades are different, Plus his Shovel is slanted towards the viewer and the one on the badge is only rounded because the pick axes are covering it at the corners.
@ Jo the Martian: You're telling me you can't see it? Ok, try this: Imagine a shovel head, then take three pick axes, arrange them over the shove head like how you see in the picture and you got the Mine badge's design.
If you still can't see it, at least acknowledge and consider the possibility since most of the badges make references to the Gym leader's locations, personalities, props and/or designs.
I know we all take in visual info different, thus we see different patterns and things even if we're staring at the same thing.
Coal Badge = Miner's hat like Roark's helmet. Yet some see a bolder and a Pokéball.
Forest Badge = Trees and I'm not affraid to say this, but Gardenia is a tree hugger type.
Cobble Badge = Cobble stone/Brick yet to some it looks like a tatami mat.
Fen Badge = Crasher Wake's Mask. Yet somehow people see grey reeds on a lake instead of crystal blue water with a "wake" and "crashing wave." Or the very least Fins sense Fen and Fin sound so much alike.
Relic Badge = Fantina's Drifblim cross inspired hair (somehow O,o.; )
Mine Bade = 3 pick axes and a shovel/spade like Byron's Shovel. Yet to some it looks like 3 pick axes with 3 stones in the voids.
Icicle/Glacier Badge = Iceberg with icy water gracing it's bottom. Yet to some it looks like two icy mountains (when depending on how i follow the points it can look like 3-5 mountains) also to some extent it could look like an upside down group of Icicles.
Beacon Badge = Shinning Beacon, kind of like on a tall Radio Tower or the cooling towers of a power pant. The shape of the badge is even triangular like a stereotypical radio tower, however to some the badge looks like a light house.
It all depends on a number of factors, your knowledge/intelligence (not putting anyone down) and how keen your eye is are major factors. To some, especially those who don't know Bulbadsaur (<-knowledge) the Bulbapedia logo might look like a green colored Onion or an unopened flower. Of course its obviously the Bulb from a Bulbasaur. Howerver, still some people might see that but miss the Pokéball design integrated into the logo.
Looking at Crasher Wake's picture, I can't help but notice he vaguely looks like Gyarados. The way he has his mouth constantly open. His hair looks like Gyarados' fins, and the shape and angle they make mixed with his Mask's middle strap looks like Gyarados' 3-point Crest.
I guarantee you that the Mine Badge having a shovel shape is not as out there as the Relic Badge looking like Fantina's Drifblim cross inspired hair. Its all about a persons prospective.
Now I'd like to take this time to state I'm not trying to cause trouble or call anyone out with debating this with my less than graceful approach. I have trouble expressing what I want to say, and it often gets me in trouble with people. I just thought it was beast to clear that up given a few past experiences and the various horror stories I've heard about wikis which kept me at a distance for almost most of the time wikis have existed. Yamitora1 13:52, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
I'm very well aware of what the head of a shovel and spade look like. But I'm still staying with the shapes being so undefined that it could be anything, but the more likely thing would be rocks, or ores. Since that's what happens when you mine with a pickax: Rocks and ore tumble out of the earth. If there were more defined handles, maybe, but just the head I find unlikely. Even the pickaxes have handles still attached to them. I think you're just being a little too hopeful. Also, Crasher Wake's hair looks nothing like Gyarados. It's just a little tuff on top of his head. The white things you're referring to are part of his mask. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 14:04, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
The comment on what they look like was directed at LittleMidget123. The pick axes only have handles because they're faced in wards pointing out. Also the Pick axes are the handles for the shovel(s) depending on which angle you come at. There are 4 Shovel heads, each stone is a shovel head, with the pick axe handle as its handle. all three then make a large shovel head. The large Shove head has the pick axe handle as the little ridge where the handle is wedged into the shovel blade. What do you mean too hopeful? Yamitora1 14:30, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

You left the message for me too.

"@ Jo the Martian: You're telling me you can't see it? Ok, try this: Imagine a shovel head, then take three pick axes, arrange them over the shove head like how you see in the picture and you got the Mine badge's design."

And by too hopeful, I meant you're too determined to prove something that isn't there. I'd also prefer you spelled my name correctly. Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 14:37, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I was trying to get you to imagine how you would see a shovel. Also I woke up 10 am EST Monday Morning, I spent all day working on commissions, reviews and other art and word stuff. I haven't even been to bed yet. it is now 11 am EST Tuesday Morning and still I'm not tired. However, a simple and innocent spelling error will happen when you're up 25 hours no matter if you're tired or not.

There are multiple constructs to this badge. You have to look at all the pieces to see the bigger picture. If I asked you if you see a shield, do you think you can see it?

Pieces: Byron has a shovel, He mines, he has a Bastiodon which is basically a shield. Put it all together you get the mine badge.

Picture: The pick axes are pick axes, and they are also the handles and outline line art of multiple shovels and one big shovel head/shield. Not only do the shovel heads make up a shield, so does the entire badge.

Maybe we should get some fresher eyes on this and ask what they think. Kenji girls seems like a level headed candidate, what do you say? Yamitora1 15:10, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

I'm not seeing shovel heads in the Mine Badge either. I can see the shape you're assuming to be shovel heads, but they simply make no sense in being shovel heads rather than being rocks/ore. Their color is extremely wrong for a shovel head, their shape isn't proper for a shovel head as they're too wide and broadly angled, and they're not remotely as defined as the pickaxes are. You're looking too deeply for things that really just aren't there. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 15:41, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
Isolate the middle Pickaxe and middle brown patch, that is the first shovel. Never mind that it's not the exact shape you think of when you thank of a shovel head. When it comes to a pikachu's tail, does a thunderbolt shape not appear in your mind? Ok, now for the big shovel head, look at the shape all three brown patches make, ignore the pickaxe intersection, that is one giant shovel head and it doubles as a shield. (like the one Link from LOZ has)
Because of how it is designed, you can make a shovel and shield which ever way you turn it. This gives you 3 pickaxes, 3 shoves, 1 shovel head/ 1 shield. Yamitora1 16:14, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
On the same note, the Boulder Badge seems a lot more like the top of a cut diamond. And the Trio Badge does not look like an ear of corn. プリングルズ/品客薯片/ప్రింగిల్స్ 03:33, 23 May 2012 (UTC)
Who wrote these? At the very least the Trio Badge looks like a bow tie like what all three brothers wear.
Also here's a picture that outlines where I see the shovel and shield shape. Yamitora1 03:40, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Trio Badge = Bowtie

Just bringing this up as I saw others talking about it. I agree with them, the Trio Badge does not resemble an ear of corn. Turn it to the side and it clearly resembles a bow tie, which all three leaders wear. Kookamooka 15:41, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

I can kind of see both, simply because it's yellow around the "kernels". I admit it's not exactly like an ear of corn, it's a bit more stylized. But I'm indifferent on the argument. If it changes, I don't mind. If it stays, I don't mind. Or hey, we could even say it's corn, and a bowtie. Btw, if anyone asks where corn even came from, the triplet's Japanese names are based on corn. Dent (corn), Corn, and Pod (corn). Jo the Marten ಠ_ಠ 16:23, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
I can see shovel(s) and I can see a shield in the Mine Badge, but I can't see a ear of corn in the Trio Badge. Maybe at the most, the only thing I can see other than a obvious bow tie is a fancy corn chucker knife. Yamitora1 02:23, 31 May 2012 (UTC)
Can someone change it? I think it's fair to say that t is not shaped like a kernel of corn. Kookamooka 20:38, 2 June 2012 (UTC)
Only an admin can change it since the article is locked...hint hint Jo, we commoners lack your power here....for we would abuse it by making it rain Politoads. (sorry, I'm on one of my insomnia kicks...almost put amnesia and then i got amnesia on what I meant to say and then spelled inamesia, inanemia and then ansomnia instead of Insomnia)
Although it doesn't look like a ear of corn, I have to say it might look like a Peapod with three peas. Sometimes the Peapod hugs the peas and makes a shape like that (albeit more rounded.) well i am off to go to bed. Yamitora1 14:48, 4 June 2012 (UTC)
So admin... please change this? Kookamooka 21:25, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

They're separate because it makes it clear which badges are in which game. With a list of ten like that, the header implies that all ten have to be obtained in order to get to the league, and the only evidence to the contrary is buried at the end of the notes text, where it's highly likely to be missed. Combining them like that would make the page unclear. Werdnae (talk) 05:34, 30 January 2013 (UTC)

Nando's Badges?

The article says that Nando has three unknown badges, two of which match Barry's three unknown badges. However, the picture of Nando's badge case shows the Icicle Badge, the Coal Badge, the Forest Badge, the Cobble Badge, the Relic Badge, a space for the Mine Badge and two of Barry's unknown badges. Where's his third unknown? This message brought to you by Glitchipedia, the falsified encyclopedia (talk) 09:15, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

The fact that his Badge case shows a space for the Mine Badge is rendered moot considering he has two Badges that aren't in-game. That's the unknown Badge. The one we never see. Ataro (talk) 10:07, 2 September 2013 (UTC)
All that means is that we don't know for sure what badge fits that space. Saying he definitely has three anime-exclusive badges is highly misleading. This message brought to you by Glitchipedia, the falsified encyclopedia (talk) 23:44, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Badges In Real Life Section?

I actually came to this page, because I was hoping to figure out where to buy badges online (since other pages with items link to realistic merchandise or at least mention it exists, such as the Ash's Hat page). An online retailer named Sanshee.com has the first five generations of badges for sale as pins (some have slight coloring errors, but mostly realistic):

Gen. 1 Badges (Sold-Out): http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-generation-1

Gen. 2 Badges (Sold-Out): http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-gen-2

Gen. 3 Badges (Sold-Out): http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-gen-3

Gen. 4 Badges (Sold-Out) (Mine Badge seems to have a major coloring error): http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-gen-4

Gen. 5 Badges: http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-gen-5

Gen. 5 Expansion (Sold-Out): http://sanshee.com/store/product/gym-badges-gen-5-addon

--BlackButterfree (talk) 02:10, 29 June 2014 (UTC)

If we were to put a merchandise section on this page (which will happen if all things go well), it'll only acknowledge officially licensed badges, which do actually exist. As far as i can find on that website, the badges they have aren't official. Most badges are available through either Pokémon Center campaigns or Pokémon League. Question

Since the badges in the Game Boy Color games boost the attacks of their gym's type, what boost does the Earth Badge give?--Benayla (talk) 15:06, 14 July 2015 (UTC)

Best guess would be Ground because it was formerly a Ground gym. Litwick96 (talk) 16:18, 14 July 2015 (UTC)
I'd agree with the above, but I assume one of the badges would give either give a two type boost, or otherwise Dark would be left out. --Spriteit (talk) 12:11, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

Flint giving out a badge

It says next to the Beacon Badge (under other in the anime), that Flint is a giver of said badge. If memory serves correctly (and I'm not trying to be cocky by any means) because it usually does: Ash and Flint battled one-on-one. I think it was the Proprietor who suggested that Flint battle Ash instead. Ash and Flint battled in the Sunyshore Gym, using Volkner's robotic referee, but at no point during that episode did Flint issue Ash a badge. Volkner did this himself. This should be fixed. Earth Badge design

だれだ?

What is the source for the design of the Earth Badge used on the page (to the right)? It doesn't look similar to any of the game, TCG, anime or manga depictions I can find on the wiki (or elsewhere), and the file categories aren't telling me anything. It's a common enough design if you search for the badge on sites like deviantart, but I can't for the life of me locate its source... the uploader's talk page doesn't give any solid leads either. He mentioned Psypokes but after poking around the site today and on archive.org way back to 2006 (a bit after he uploaded the file) I couldn't find anything (perhaps he meant on the forums?). Is it some obscure Dream World artwork, or have we been propagating a fan design of this badge for over a decade? ._. - MK (t/c) 05:02, 12 February 2016 (UTC)

I found it being used officially, in Extreme Pokémon: The Guide for the Ultimate Fan. The angle has been added by Bulbapedia (as you can see in the file history), but it is official artwork. There's no guarantee this is the origin, but it is a place that it was used (prior to Bulbapedia). --SnorlaxMonster 09:26, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
Also, these images are used in Pokémon Project Studio. I've gone and replaced our low-res images with these higher quality images. (According to #Hoenn/Shin'ō Badges, the old images were redrawn by a fan, but still adapted from official art from the Tracey West books.) --SnorlaxMonster 12:27, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
Fascinating! Thanks for the quick reply. Glad we'll be using a more clearly fair use and higher res version now, at least :D I wonder if it's appeared in any official media post-2000, or in any Japanese media. - MK (t/c) 14:05, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
If you can find any Kanto Badge artwork in official sources at all, that would be interesting. We weren't able to find any in the English guidebooks we checked. --SnorlaxMonster 02:53, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Experience reward cap

In Sword and Shield, the experience you can receive from wild encounters is capped depending on the number of Badges that you have. This Pokémon.com article specifically mentions that if you have 2 Badges, defeating a Pokémon that is over Level 35 will not yield any more experience than if that Pokémon was Level 35.

We're going to need to work out what the cap is for each Badge, because unlike the obedience and capture caps, it is not listed in-game. --SnorlaxMonster 14:11, 4 January 2020 (UTC)

GSC Glacier Badge SpD boost

Based on [2] (also see [3]), I'll try to explain my reading on when the SpD boost is not applied:

  • The Special Defense boost is not applied if bit 0 of a is not set
  • If the Special Attack boost was applied, a is not what it used to be, contrary to what the programmers apparently assumed
  • It is instead (per line 6839)
    • the high byte of the (Badge-boosted) SpA stat
    • minus the high byte of the maximum stat of 999 (read: 3)
    • minus the carry from the same operation on the low bytes (where the subtrahend is 231), i.e. minus one if SpA%256-231 is less than zero
  • Consequently, bit 0 of a will be unset with a Badge-boosted SpA stat of 232-487 (inclusive), which translates to 206-433 (inclusive) before the Badge boost. Nescientist (talk) 14:23, 8 March 2020 (UTC)

What type does Blue's badge boost in GSC?

The article claims that "The type strengthened matches the type theme of the Gym", but Blue's Gym has no set type. So what type does it boost? Ground? Golden Trainer (talk) 13:31, 28 June 2021 (UTC)

Pokémon Sword and Shield Level Catch Limit (please add)

Yeah, the one mechanic that disallows SwSh players from catching "strong-looking" Pokémon until they have enough badges. It's not listed anywhere in the page.

Anyone with the copy of the game, can you guys verify this mechanic, as well as the level cap for each badge? I wanted to add it to the page, but I don't have a copy of the game.

I think the Exp. gain limit (e.g. having 2 badges means defeating a Pokémon above level 35 only yields what it would yield at level 35) from the same game is also worth mentioning.

Exaskliri (talk) 14:16, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

Isn't what you're looking for in the "Obeying Pokémon" section? It lists such info as "Up to Lv. 30. Can capture Pokémon up to Lv. 25". No information about limit of exp gain, but I wasn't able to find anything about it with a quick search. If you know more about it, it would be nice if you could provide that data - some evidence of this mechanic existing, at least. Itan (talk) 11:13, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for pointing this out. Didn't know that the section also mentions the catch level limit. For the exp gain limit, it's mentioned on this official Pokemon.com site. It also mentions that higher star Max Raid battles also require more badges, but only explicitly mentions that the five-star battles is unlocked with the Dragon Badge (the last badge). Exaskliri (talk) 13:07, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
