Sync grid

Sync grid (Japanese: バディストーンボード Buddy Stone Board) is a feature in Pokémon Masters EX introduced in version 1.5.5 that allows the player to strengthen sync pairs in unique ways. The sync grid consists of hexagonal tiles, with each tile unlocking a grid skill. Each grid skill offers different enhancements, such as raising stats, enhancing moves and unlocking passive skills.

Roxie's sync grid

To activate a tile, the player must use a certain number of sync orbs (Japanese: バディドロップ Buddy Drop) which are specific to the sync pair. Only tiles adjacent to another activated tile can be activated. Some tiles may have additional requirements. For example, certain tiles will require a certain sync move level before the tile can be activated. Tiles located further away from the sync stone tend to require higher sync move levels.

Except for the basic grid skills surrounding the sync stone, activating a tile requires a certain amount of energy. Tiles located further away from the sync stone tend to require more energy to activate. There is a maximum energy of 60 which means the player will be unable to activate all tiles on the sync grid at the same time. The sync grid can be reset for free to deactivate all tiles and regain all energy and sync orbs. Each tile can also be reset separately. If a tile required for other tiles to activate is reset, those tiles will be deactivated, too.

Originally, the sync grid feature was unlocked by completing Chapter 11: Alola's Rising Stars on Normal difficulty. Starting from version 1.12.0, the sync grid feature is unlocked by completing Chapter 2: New Friends, New Foes on Normal difficulty.

Sync orbs

There are two types of sync orbs.

  •  Sync orbs are blue orbs that are exclusive to each sync pair. These sync orbs are primarily available through converting co-op sync orbs to sync-pair-specific sync orbs on the Sync Grid menu, though they can sometimes be obtained during a sync pair's debut event.
  •  Co-op sync orbs are yellow orbs which can be used on any sync pair's sync grid. These orbs are primarily obtained through the Sync Orb Drill in the training area, with a chance to obtain up to 900 orbs per day. 10 co-op sync orbs can be exchanged for one sync pair-specific sync orb on the Sync Grid menu.

Types of grid tiles

There are six different types of grid tiles:

  • Blue tiles, which are found on every sync grid, increase the sync pair's stats (HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, Sp. Def, or Speed).
  • Green tiles increase the accuracy or power of a move listed in the tile.
  • Red tiles give passive skills specific to the listed move in the tile.
  • Yellow tiles give passive skills that are not limited to one move, and may not involve moves at all.
  • Rainbow tiles increase the power of sync moves.
  • Orange and purple tiles increase the power of the Max Move or G-Max Move, respectively, listed in the tile.

Energy cap

Beginning in version 2.42.0, players can spend co-op sync orbs to increase the energy cap of a sync pair's sync grid beyond the initial cap of 60. Spending 20,000 co-op sync orbs increases the cap by 2 energy, up to a maximum of 5 times for a maximum of 70 energy. The maximum energy cap is determined by the move level of the sync pair; the move level of the pair corresponds with the amount of times the energy cap can be raised by 2.

Move level Maximum energy cap Co-op sync orbs required
1 62 20,000
2 64 40,000
3 66 60,000
4 68 80,000
5 70 100,000

Defunct mechanics

As the game has been updated over time, certain mechanics have been removed or otherwise function differently. These are included here for historical purposes.

Old methods of obtaining sync orbs:

  • Prior to version 2.0.0, co-op sync orbs were obtained after defeating Super Hard and Hard Supercourses, which reward 100 and 50 co-op sync orbs, respectively.
  • Prior to version 1.9.0, co-op sync orbs were obtained from co-op battles when the "Sync orb chance!" message appeared.
  • Prior to version 1.9.0, sync pair-specific sync orbs were obtained when a sync move was used during a single player battle when the "Sync orb chance!" message appeared before the battle. If successful, the player was rewarded with 5 sync orbs specific to the sync pair who used the sync move. The odds of a sync orb chance increased each time the player won a battle. The odds returned to their initial state after obtaining a sync orb and subsequently increased at a lower rate. These chances were reset when the date changed.

Cost of resetting sync grids:

  • Prior to version 2.6.0 the first reset for each sync pair was free, and subsequent resets costed 1,000 coins for each tile. There was no option to reset tiles separately.

Sync grid expansion

Basic grid

At the launch of sync grids, most sync pairs started with basic grids, containing only the six tiles surrounding the sync stone. Each of these tiles costs no energy to activate and provides a slight increase to the sync pair's stats.

Starting from the topmost tile and moving clockwise around the sync stone, the tiles on a basic sync grid are as follows:

  • Speed +5
  • HP +10
  • Attack/Sp. Atk +5
  • Defense +5
  • Attack/Sp. Atk +5
  • Sp. Def +5

All sync pairs have at least a basic sync grid except pairs that   Scottie and   Bettie form with Egg Pokémon.

Expanded grid

Over time, almost all basic grids have been updated into expanded grids. From December 25, 2021 to March 25, 2023, three sync pairs received an upgrade from a basic grid to an expanded grid on each Pokémon Masters Day. By the end of this period, all sync pairs with sync grids had expanded grids except:

Additionally, almost all sync pairs released after the introduction of grids came with expanded grids already available. As such, Jessie & Arbok and James & Weezing are the only sync pairs with sync grids that do not have expanded grids.

The design of the expanded grid is dependent on the sync pair's role. Generally, all sync pairs with the same role have the same grid layout. However, some  Tech sync grids instead use a snowflake shape:

Additional six tiles

Some sync pairs with expanded grids may receive six additional grid tiles on top of that.

There are two ways this can apply:

  • Horizontal expansions add tiles to the left and right of the sync stone.
  • Vertical expansions add titles above and below the sync stone.

In a horizontal expansion:

  • Two of these tiles are blue, cost 0 energy, grant +20 in one stat, and are adjacent to the basic six tiles surrounding the sync stone. These have no sync move level requirement.
  • The remaining four tiles tend to be red or yellow, and are adjacent to the two aforementioned blue tiles. These have sync move level requirements of 2 or 3.

In a vertical expansion:

  • Two of the extra tiles will fill the "holes" present on the grid layout, between the basic six tiles surrounding the sync stone and the rainbow tiles adjusting sync move power. These tiles have a sync move level requirement of 2.
  • Two of the extra tiles will be along the top edge of the grid, and two will be along the bottom edge of the grid. These have sync move level requirements of 4 or 5.
  • The new tiles tend to be red or yellow.
  • These tiles are only available to fair-exclusive sync pairs (sync pairs that can only be obtained in Poké Fair sync pair scouts).
  • For snowflake-shaped sync grids, this expansion is between the far branches of the snowflake, instead of just being positioned vertically.

Starting from August 25, 2022, one sync pair receives a horizontal expansion on Pokémon Masters Day each month.

Vertical expansions have been given to all fair-exclusive sync pairs introduced since September 28, 2022. Older fair-exclusive sync pairs can receive them when they rerun. Typically, if multiple fair-exclusive sync pairs rerun in the same banner, only one will receive a vertical grid expansion.

  Power boost

Sync pairs obtained through Legendary Adventures can receive a pair-specific power boost from the villain event corresponding to their region.

A Power Boost can enable a pair to perform Mega Evolution, or add six tiles to the pair's sync grid (but not both). Which is received will vary based on the pair.

The extra tiles added by a power boost act as a horizontal expansion, as described above.

List of sync pairs with expanded sync grids

Legendary Adventures sync pairs can only access their horizontal expansion after their power boost item is obtained. These sync pairs are denoted with an asterisk (*).

Trivia

  • Sygna Suit Blue & Blastoise were the first sync pair to receive an additional expansion to their sync grid, receiving six new tiles along the horizontal axis in version 2.1.0.
    • This makes them the sync pair with the shortest gap between receiving an expanded sync grid and an additional expansion, at 33 days.
  • Lance & Dragonite are the only sync pair to have received both a horizontal and a vertical grid expansion on the same day.
  • Sygna Suit Cynthia & Kommo-o have the shortest amount of time between receiving separate sync grid expansions, with only nine days separating their vertical expansion and their horizontal expansion.
