Announcing himself as "Alex Davis from [[Cherrygrove City]]" at the beginning of the episode, he challenged [[Gary Oak]] to a [[Pokémon Battle]] using his {{p|Alakazam}}. Alakazam first used {{m|Zap Cannon}}, which [[Gary's Umbreon]] dodged, leading Alakazam to use {{m|Psychic}}, which had no effect at all. Using his Umbreon's finishing move {{m|Hidden Power}}, Gary was able to defeat Alex without much trouble. {{Ash}}, [[Misty]], and [[Brock]], who had been traveling nearby saw the battle, leading to another encounter between Ash and his rival.
