Kenzo was the {{wp|shihan}} of his own {{wp|dojo}}. However the years were catching up to him and he needed to pass on the duty to someone else. A likely candidate was his granddaughter [[Chigusa]].  However, he didn't want her to be shihan because she was more concerned with her Pokémon's moves "looking pretty" rather than concentrating on battling, and wanted [[Ash]] to be his heir. Later on, Chigusa proved herself worthy and she became shihan of the dojo.
