Ruby's Journey
Once living somewhere in Johto, Ruby moved to Hoenn in volume 15, against his will. Ruby enjoys participating in Pokémon Contests, and wound up running away from his new home in Littleroot Town because he felt that he was being oppressed by his father, Norman, who didn't approve of Ruby's lifestyle choice. Ruby, on the other hand, despises Pokémon battles and refuses to battle unless he has no other choice, though as a child he adored battling. As a child, he met Sapphire once, and the young Ruby and Sapphire had alot of fun with each other... until their fun was interupted by a Salamence. Acting quickly, Ruby was able to knock it out with his Pokémon, but got his forehead split in the process. It was his fault that day, when his father failed the Gym Leader Test because the Salamence broke into Rayquaza's containment area, and set it free. At that time, Rayquaza was being held by the Pokemon Association near the place he and Sapphire were playing. Sapphire ran away crying, and later came to realize she ruined Ruby's dignity, and vowed to become stronger. Ruby, on the other hand, realized he had been too brutal, and promised to supress his stregth in battle.
Once living somewhere in Johto, Ruby moved to Hoenn in volume 15, against his will as he felt that he preferred the modern cities of Johto to the wilderness and countryside in Hoenn. Ruby enjoys participating in Pokémon Contests, and wound up running away from his new home in Littleroot Town because he felt that he was being oppressed by his father, Norman, who didn't approve of Ruby's lifestyle choice of being a Pokemon Coordinator to win all the Contests. Ruby despises Pokémon battles and refuses to battle unless he has no other choice, though as a child he adored battling.

After running away, Ruby enountered Sapphire, who challenged him to a contest of her own -- to see if he could win all the contests in Hoenn within 80 days, and if she could defeat all the Gyms. However, their challenge was abandoned when they teamed up to stop the rampaging Kyogre and Groudon. (Actually, their challenge remains, possibly because Sapphire recieved two more badges during the Groudon/Kyogre ficasso, and Ruby, another Ribbon)

Though Ruby believed that Norman would not allow him to participate in contests, Norman actually was going to permit it, before Ruby ran away from home. Many fans believe that Ruby ran away because Norman was physically abusive, but he is only shown actually harming his son once, after he ran away. So far there is no evidence for or against this theory.
After running away, Ruby enountered Sapphireonce again without recognising her as the girl of so many years ago, who challenged him to a contest of her own -- to see if he could win all the contests in Hoenn within 80 days, and if she could defeat all the Gyms. Ruby accepted readily, thinking that he would win without a doubt. However, their challenge was abandoned when they teamed up to stop the rampaging Kyogre and Groudon by using the Red and Blue Jewels. (Actually, their challenge remains, possibly because Sapphire recieved two more badges during the Groudon/Kyogre fiasco, and Ruby, another Ribbon)

Though Ruby believed that Norman would not allow him to participate in contests, Norman was going to permit it because he felt that he was old enough, before Ruby ran away from home. Many fans believe that Ruby ran away because Norman was physically abusive, but he is only shown actually harming his son once, after he ran away. So far there is no evidence for or against this theory. However, Ruby has hinted once or twice that he only ran away because he was not permitted to enter contests.
