Well, I was thinking about this randomly and the fact that the original versions of Pokémon were the Red and Green versions, along with Ritchie's outfit being ''green''... As we know, the opening scene of the first episode uses Red version's Nidorino vs. Gengar as opposed to Green/Blue version's Jigglypuff vs. Gengar, indicating Ash's journey as being the "Red version" (And hey, the name Ash actually comes from the Red version, if it came from Green/Blue he'd be ''Gary'') may indicate that the signifigance of Ritchie's green outfit is that he may be intended as the hero of the "Green version".
