In search of mysterious stones, the player, Trevor, and Jacq visit the ruins. To their surprise, a man calls out to them. He introduces himself as Volo, an "ordinary merchant." He asks the three if they are looking for anything in particular, and Trevor shows him a picture of a mysterious stone using his Poryphone. As Volo begins to tell him that he has never seen one before, his Togepi exits from her Poké Ball.

Jacq is charmed by Togepi's cuteness, and Trevor uses his Poryphone again to check his Pokédex. Curious, Volo asks about the device. Jacq explains its ability to register any Pokémon. When Trevor tells Volo that it's his dream to register Pokémon from around the world in his Pokédex, Volo commends him for it. Jacq reveals that he created a Pokédex app, and that as a teacher, he wants to help students learn as much as they can about Pokémon. Intrigued by everyone, Volo invites them to a battle. The player sides with Volo against Jacq and Trevor.

After the battle, Volo asks Jacq to tell him more about the Pokédex. Jacq happily accepts, interested in getting to know Volo. Volo then tells the others of his interest in researching myths, saying he will gladly share information with Trevor to help him complete his Pokédex. Jacq is excited to introduce Volo to the others on Pasio, but Volo declines, mentioning he doesn't want to be seen by a Rei. When Trevor asks who it is, Volo doesn't elaborate. He tells the others he will see them later and casually leaves. Jacq is a bit confused, but he and Trevor are happy to become better friends with him.

In the square, Jacq teaches a group of children, including Trevor and the player, about Pokémon. A Poké Kid in the group asks him where Pokémon come from. As Professor Oak and Mew pass by in the background, Jacq starts by focusing on mythical Pokémon, specifically Mew. He describes Mew as something of a "blueprint" for all Pokémon, and how this leads it to be considered the first Pokémon.

When a Youngster asks where Mew came from, Jacq draws a blank. A voice comes to his aid, reciting the Sinnoh myths. The voice is revealed to be Volo's, and he approaches the group to teach everyone about how Arceus is believed to have formed life. The children are amazed, and Jacq encourages them to find their own answers to the mysteries of Pokémon.

After the class ends, Jacq thanks Volo for his help. As Volo compliments Jacq's teaching style, N overhears and joins the conversation. As the group discusses for a while, Togepi exits from its Poké Ball, to Volo's surprise. N is happy to see it, but when Togepi speaks back to him, he suddenly pauses. N notes that Togepi is "being well taken care of." Volo is confused, prompting Trevor to explain N's ability to talk to Pokémon. This fascinates Jacq, and N explains that Togepi told him that she is appreciative of the love and care Volo gives her. Volo mentions that his research involves caring for Pokémon, and that he is simply curious about Togepi.

Volo changes the subject back to N's abilities, and Trevor brings up that N's partner Pokémon are Legendary Pokémon from Unova. N brings out both Zekrom and Reshiram. Seeing that N can understand Legendary Pokémon, Volo asks if he can understand a supposed deity Pokémon as well. N is unsure, but mentions he would like to have the opportunity to meet one.

N suddenly realizes that he was supposed to deliver a mysterious stone to Professor Bellis. Volo asks about the stone, and N explains that they give off a great energy when reacting to the connection between a Trainer and their Pokémon. He holds one out for everyone to see. Volo wonders if the mysterious stones are being used like sync stones, but N says they are too unstable to use with Poryphones. As the group continues to discuss, Volo thinks to himself about the stone, determining that he will need to assist the people researching it.

The next day, Volo visits Colress and asks about his plans to utilize mysterious stones in Poryphones. As Colress explains how to keep the stones' powerful energy controlled, Volo smiles widely. Sometime later, Volo meets up with Jacq, Trevor, and the player again. He suggests to Jacq that he should use his skills as both a programmer and a teacher to help the process of integrating the stones into Poryphones. Volo even shows him a list of ideas for how he could go about it. The player and Trevor both encourage Jacq to do it, and he agrees. As the group begins to head toward Bellis's lab, Volo stays behind. He tells the others that he has plans to meet with some people, and they agree to talk later.

Alone, Volo considers what it's like to form a relationship with a person. He determines that it is important for someone to use another before they become the one being used. Volo's thoughts continue as the scene changes to the stadium, where Professor Bellis and Rei stand inside of a group. Volo is revealed to be at the stadium as well, vowing to himself to bring Arceus under his control to create a better world. He approaches the group ahead.
