Route 1
1 is a peaceful, country road that leads north from Pallet Town to Viridian City. The path is riddled with patches of tall grass and one-way ledges that make northward travel difficult. It is not yet possible to catch any of the wild Pokémon here, but it is still good to battle them to earn valuable Experience Points.

Viridian City is a small city, and the first one you reach with a Pokémon Gym. However, the mysterious Gym Leader is out of town, and the Gym has been closed indefinitely.
Viridian City is a small, nature-loving city that is enveloped in green year-round. It is located between 1 to the south, 2 to the north, and 22 to the west.

Pokémon Center
Pokémon Center
The first building you'll reach is the Pokémon Center. This Pokémon hospital will heal your team to full health and normal status, and Trainers are free to use the PC in the corner. In addition to accessing your item storage, these PCs can also access your Pokémon storage. Since you can only carry six with you at once, any others are immediately transferred to storage upon capture. It is typically a good idea to heal up and save your progress whenever you enter a Pokémon Center.

Behind the Pokémon Center is the local Poké Mart. These stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. When you step inside, the cashier asks you to deliver a parcel to Professor Oak. The cashier will not sell anything until the delivery is made.
Another shop sits to the northeast of the Pokémon Center. This is the local Poké Mart; these stores offer a variety of Poké Balls, Potions, and other items. It is a good idea to stock up on supplies whenever possible, as there is no telling what you may run into on your journey.

Special Delivery
When you step inside, the shopkeeper recognizes you as someone from Pallet Town and calls you over to the counter. It seems that Professor Oak had ordered something that was recently delivered. The shopkeeper hands I to you and asks that you take it to him. The man is adamant, so you will not be able to make any purchases until the delivery is made.

Oak's Lab
Oak's Lab
When you deliver the parcel to the professor, Blue runs in and starts yelling about how much his Pokémon has grown. Oak gives you both a Pokédex, a high-tech Pokémon encyclopedia. This little machine will record all available data on the Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of Generation I Pokémon. Visit your rival's sister Daisy before leaving town to get a Town Map.
Deliver I, a custom Poké Ball, to him and Blue arrives a moment later. The professor has a request for each of you: take the Pokédex he invented and use it to gather information on all the Pokémon in the world. This handheld device is a high-tech encyclopedia that records data on every Pokémon you encounter, and will be complete when you catch a member of every species. It was Oak's dream to do this himself, but his advanced age means that he must rely on the two of you instead.

Blue's house
Visit your rival's house before leaving town and speak to his sister, Daisy, to receive a Town Map.

Viridian City
With I delivered, it is now possible to purchase items at the Poké Mart, and the old man that had blocked the path northward is feeling better now that he has had his coffee. When you pass him, he demonstrates how to catch a Pokémon as an apology for being rude. His attempt is unsuccessful, and he heads off to buy more Poké Balls.

At this point, you may proceed north to Route 2, or make an optional detour westward to 22 first.

Route 22
It is not yet possible to fully explore 22, but you may still hunt for new Pokémon. A short way into the route, Blue appears and challenges you to a battle.

Viridian City
Rival Battle 2
The old man that had blocked your way northward has had his coffee now. When you pass him, he tries to show you how to catch a Pokémon. It doesn't work though, and he runs off to buy more Poké Balls. Before heading north, detour to 22 in order to battle Blue and catch some new Pokémon.
Little has changed since your fight in Oak's Lab, but his first Pokémon has learned a new move. Blue has added a Spearow to his team, as well. Use the same tactics from your last battle to wear his Pokémon down and take the win.

Route 22
{| style="margin: auto;"
22 is a short route that runs west of Viridian. The path is a dead-end right now, but you can battle Blue and hunt for new Pokémon here.

Keep in mind that your rival's team later in the game is dependent upon the outcome of this battle along with the previous one. If you want your rival's Eevee to evolve into an Electric type, you had to have won the first battle and win this battle as well. If you want your rival's Eevee to evolve into a Water type, you had to have lost the first battle. If you want your rival's Eevee to evolve into a Fire type, you had to win the first battle and either lose or skip this battle.

Continue to the north to fight a Bug Catcher. Walk straight ahead to find another Bug Catcher, as well as a Potion. Turn to the west, then head south. Follow the path as it winds around until you come to a dead-end with a Potion. Go north to find a hidden Potion in front of the final Bug Catcher. The exit is just a little further north.
