The Teal Mask: Difference between revisions

The player and Kieran choose to leave finding the last signboard until the next day in order to participate in the first day of the yearly celebration known as the Festival of Masks, where the Loyal Three are honored. During the celebration, the player and Carmine have an unexpected encounter with the ogre, {{ga|Ogerpon}}, who accidentally drops her [[Teal Mask]]. Carmine chooses to keep the encounter a secret from her brother for now. The next day, the player shows the mask to Kieran and Carmine’s grandfather [[Yukito and Hideko|Yukito]], who reveals the true story of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three: ages ago, a man arrived in Kitakami with Ogerpon, but they were shunned due to their unusual appearances, forcing them to live on Oni Mountain. Only the village's mask maker pitied them, creating them a set of masks adorned with jewels the man had brought with him, which allowed the man and Ogerpon to hide their faces and take part in the village festival. However, the word of the beautiful masks attracted {{p|Okidogi|three}} {{p|Munkidori|greedy}} {{p|Fezandipiti|Pokémon}} to Kitakami. They attacked the man and stole three of the four masks he tried to protect. Finding her home in ruins, Ogerpon, full of anger, donned the remaining mask, found the three Pokémon with the masks had stolen, and defeated them. The townspeople, not understanding what had happened, assumed the three Pokémon had fallen trying to protect them from the violent ogre, and named them the Loyal Three. Ogerpon subsequently returned to the mountain and was not seen again.

Carmine is outraged upon finding out that the people of Kitakami have been worshipping evil Pokémon for all this time, but Hideko tells her not to reveal the secret to anyone, as the mask maker, who had known the truth, had been labeled as a heretic for speaking against the Loyal Three in the past. Since the Teal Mask was chipped when it was dropped, the player leaves it for Hideko to be repaired while they visit the last signboard with Kieran, unaware that he had secretly listened to his grandfather's story and is feeling betrayed for having been lied to regarding the player's encounter with Ogerpon. The next day, the player and Carmine visit the [[Crystal Pool]] at the summit of Oni Mountain to gather a [[Crystal Cluster]] required to fix the Teal Mask. At the summit, the player has a brief encounter with Briar, who reveals that the crystals found there emit energy similar to the [[Terastal phenomenon]], which she hopes to use to make the phenomenon usable outside of [[Paldea]].

The player and Carmine track down the empowered Loyal Three and defeat them, retrieving Ogerpon's masks one by one. Once they're done, Kieran tells them to come back to Mossui Town, where he's succeeded in convincing the townspeople of Ogerpon and the Loyal Three's true natures, clearing Ogerpon's name. The player, Carmine, and Kieran escort Ogerpon back to her home, where she expresses her desire to come with the player. Kieran suddenly demands that he should get to be Ogerpon's partner instead and challenges the player to a battle over her. After defeating Kieran, the player proceeds to battle Ogerpon with all of her masks and {{pkmn2|Caught|catch}} her. Distraught, Kieran runs away and locks himself in his room. After one more battle with Carmine, the player is informed that Briar, Carmine, and Kieran are heading back to Blueberry Academy early due to a development involving the [[Great Crater of Paldea]], though Carmine invites the player to come and see them again later. Back at Blueberry Academy, Kieran continues obsessing over getting strong enough to defeat the player and starts preparing for their arrival.
